Bartolo Coloney. Cologna. Does he have a nickname? Go Bart. Could really use a good showing from him.

Tony Massarotti, Herald - Colon hits 93 on gun

Bartolo Colon saw his first live action for the Red Sox [team stats] today and, all and all, it wasn’t a bad debut.

Colon actually hit 93 miles per hour in the first inning of the game against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to one scout. Colon’s fastball generally was clocked at 89-90 mph, thereafter, which is probably enough for him to be competitive.

As it was, the Rays loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, though an Alex Cora [stats] error certainly didn’t help. Colon got out of the mess just the same, with a strikeout, popout and groundout. He allowed only a solo homer in the second inning to No. 9 hitter Jon Weber.

Jeff Goldberg, Courant - Colon Escapes Trouble In Red Sox Debut

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Bartolo Colon made his Red Sox debut today, allowing one run on two hits over two innings with one strikeout against the Rays at City of Palms Park.

The righthander threw 26 pitches, 18 for strikes. He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first without allowing a run, then gave up a long first-pitch homer to No. 9 hitter Jon Weber in the second.

It's really sad that I've seen more ST games on ESPN than I have on NESN this year.

Matt Garza is going to be great for the Rays. The development of that team in recent years frightens me a bit. Thank goodness the O's have taken a turn for the worse. wink.gif

Scott Hotard, Naples Daily News - Spring Training live game blog: Red Sox-Rays

FORT MYERS — Colon's debut was a mixed bag. He allowed the Red Sox to bat around in the two innings he pitched, but the only run he allowed was Jon Weber's homer to right with two away in the second.

The veteran righy threw 26 pitches, 18 for strikes. He walked one and struck out one.

His biggest pitch was for strike three against B.J. Upton, who swung through the 1-2 offering with the bases loaded and nobody out in the first. He followed that by inducing a pop up by Jonny Gomes behind the plate and a grounder to first by John Rodriguez, retiring the side with no harm done.

...

Weber's homer is the only score so far. Garza just came out after four-plus scoreless innings.
