From the Herald:

FORT MYERS — Umpire Tim Tschida was just summoned to the Red Sox’ clubhouse, to get an idea of how long the start of the game could possibly be delayed before the team’s flight to Japan would be put at risk.

We hear the phone lines between the team and the powers that be with MLB continue to burn, and that commissioner Bud Selig is involved. Team president and CEO Larry Lucchino is said to be in transit to Japan as we speak.

If they do play this game, Matsuzaka will not pitch. He is going to start in a minor league game at 1 pm instead because they don't want to risk him missing a start to keep him on schedule.

RedSoxAnni
They just announced that the game will start at 1:10 pm.

Aardsma is getting the start.

I'll post the lineups when I can figure it out. They've made changes and substitutions...

See, I think that not playing this game was dangerous ground for the Sox. First of all, the organizaton would have to provide a refund to all the people that showed up, and the team itself would be on the hook. Second, its probably a breach of their own contracts which requires them to play.

I think they basically had to cave on this front, and also it gives MLB a chance to work this out.

They didn't "cave". This was a brilliant negotiating move. You put up a "chip" that isn't really important to you, and then you offer it as part of your negotiations. "Well, we'll go into closed session here. I think I MIGHT be able to convince the guys to play today's game if they are confident that YOU are going to negotiate in good faith". The players still have the upper hand. Always negotiate from strength.
