Full Version: Lowell to DL/ Lowrie called up per the Globe
Royal Rooters > WE'RE TALKIN' BASEBALL > RED SOX - ON THE FIELD
24Red Sox
The Red Sox just announced that Mike Lowell has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb.

Jed Lowrie has been purchased from Pawtucket, and has been placed on the roster. He'll be here for the game, wearing No. 12.

So of all the rookies we've had come up over the past years, Lowrie is the guy who gets a primo number instead of something in the 50s or 60s?

That's a pretty big blow -- especially defensively. Arg.

Oh well, let's see what the kid is made of.

Seems like a claim on Dan Johnson make even more sense now, though it would leave us thin at 3B.

Wish we had Hinske back, too.

Look at that, Hinske is hitting over .300 and has two homeruns this year. I'm pretty sure Hinkse would be pretty valuable right now.

Hinske is rather a mute point, even if he was here he wouldn't be playing 3B, the Sox never used him at 3B. They viewed him as a OF/DH/1B-man only.

I am kind of suprised that Lowrie got the call up over Moss or Carter, it will be interesting to see how much playing time he gets.

I'm guessing it's because Lowrie can play the position of the guy that was put on the DL.

You have to figure that Lowrie is more versitile than Moss or Carter, Moss can only play first and OF. And Moss doesn't have too much time at first and the Sox are set in the OF. Carter is horrible in the field, the only thing he can do is hit.

Back on topic: If it's just a 15 day DL trip & off (with no further complications) this doesn't sound like a major concern given Youk’s ability to play 3b & Casey’s offensive abilities while he’s filling in @ 1b. While I’m glad to see Lowrie in the show (I think we’re all rooting for him as the SS of the future) I don’t anticipate him getting many starts or even at bats over the next 2 weeks unless a game is out of hand.

Quick note: W/ the Paw Sox, Lowrie is just 4-25 in 8 games this season and has more Ks (8) than total bases (7).

So it's come to this, huh? We don't even talk about baseball in baseball threads anymore.

Not that I'm helping...

Agreed.

Guys, the Saloon exists for a reason. There's a lot to discuss here with Lowrie, so keep this thread baseball related and move the discussions about grammar and whatnot. Please, keep this discussion to baseball, as we have so few actual legit baseball threads to discuss. Thank you.

Yeah, but so can Youkilis. Moss & Carter are (supposedly) more MLB ready than Lowrie, plus having Lowrie up just to rise the bench won't help his development any.

Keep in mind that Cora is now hurt too ('day-to-day'). If Youk were to become unavailable (say, a Joba fastball gets away from him & Youk gets hit....again), what other options would you have for your infield? Also, you certainly wouldn't want Moss or Carter playing in the middle infield if Pedroia or Lugo were to become unavailable so Lowrie gives you that protection as well.

Further, I don't think 2 weeks of sitting on the pine will hurt Lowrie's development. Maybe the rest will do him some good given that his spring training & season (through 8 games) stats are so horrendous.

Where did my post go?

I am interested to see what Lowrie can do esp since he was to be part of trade packages that didn't happen for Santana.

I understand that, but what's the difference between bringing up a 1B and the situation right now (if Lowell didn't go on the DL)?

Because with Cora unavailable, if anything were to happen to Pedroia or Lugo, even just a HBP that takes them out of the game, you'd have Sean Casey at second base..

The Mayor can do anything.

I'm excited to see Lowrie. Well, in general, it's always cool to see a kid get a shot at the show, even if it's brief because you know it's the moment that kid has been waiting for his entire life. I hope we can get him in a game this weekend.

We're all rooting for him but on this trip to the bigs it's only to serve as an emergency backup.

Lowrie plays this weekend only if something unforeseen or bad happens (Sox loosing by 8+ runs, somebody goes down, etc.)

And if Cora is ready to go again today (or tomorrow, or next week), there's no reason the Sox can't send him right back down again and replace him with a bigger bat while we wait for Lowell to return. Lowrie's versatility was the more immediate need, even with his .160 start in Pawtucket, but Moss or Carter could easily end up taking his place before Lowell is back.

Heads-up in anyone is still unaware:

Lowell has been activited for tonight's game & Bryan Corey has been designated for assignment to make room.
