Bryan Corey was designated for assignment to make room for Mike Timlin, who will be activated Friday.

I was never a big Corey fan. Ive seen him pitch in real life in both Pawtucket and Boston(on wednesday)... and his stuff is really not major league quality. His numbers show a guy who's not particularly good at anything... the kind of guy every team has tons of. Strictly organizational filler. Im glad it was Corey that went, b/c there had been speculation in the media that it might be Aardsma or someone else.

Of course, knowing Theo's luck with these guys Corey will sign somewhere in the NL and post a 1.80 ERA...

I know you mean "Theo's luck" with relievers, like Joel Pineiro and J.C. Romero, but it still looks funny to use "Theo's luck" in a sentence meaning bad luck. No biggie, just sayin'.

I wish Corey the best, assuming someone picks him up.

Sadly, we need Hansen to step it up in case someone goes down, 'cause we seem to be lacking in pitching depth from the bullpen in AAA.

You do know Hansen's ERA is 0.00 in 6 innings with 8 strikeouts. He does have 3 walks though.

Yes, 6 innings of work. Let's replace Papelbon with him. mellow.gif

I meant step it up as compared to his two previous seasons so that the Red Sox have a viable option upon the fall of one of their bullpen guys a month or two down the road.

And, yes, I am following him and excited at the prospect that he'll get his ducks in a row and regain some of that star he had when we drafted him.

I don't think anyone is real sad to see Corey go, in that, no, he does not really have MLB stuff. He could get by ok when his control was pinpoint, and was a disaster waiting to happen otherwise.

But look at what his Major League career consists of:
  • 4 innings in 1998 at age 24 with the Diamondbacks.
  • 1 inning in 2002 (age 28) with the Dodgers.
  • 39 innings in 2006 (age 32) with the Rangers and Red Sox.
  • 9 1/3 innings last year, and 4 1/3 more innings this year.

The guy is 34, and he his a lifetime record of 3-1 with fewer than 60 MLB innings under his belt (and a marginally better than league average 4.53 ERA). And yet he's still hanging on, trying to make it. Hard not to root for a guy like that to catch on somewhere.

If nobody grabs him off waivers, I wouldn't be shocked to see him back in Pawtucket. But then, how can the Tigers not be claiming every single reliever who crosses the waiver wire right now? Good luck in Detroit, Bryan. whistle.gif

If he was DFA'd, what is he doing pitching tonight? I don't get it.

He cleared waivers, and elected free agency, but then signed a minor league contract with the Sox and was assigned to Pawtucket. And then the Sox called him up.

Baseball rules off the field are harder to understand than the ones in the game itself. It drives me crazy, theses off-waivers claiming, clearing waivers, arbitration-eligible, calling up and down, minor league deals, transactions with players to be named later, DFA rule 5 draft, draft, who knows what else.

It was alluded to in another thread, but Corey once again designated for assignment to make room for Mike Lowell. Great article in the Globe about a day in the life of a peripheral player like Corey who has learned to live with getting called up and sent down on a regular basis.
