Manny's ps2
With Colon, Bowden, Masterson et al getting more press, Charlie Zink is having a fine season so far in Pawtucket. Has anyone seen him pitch this year? It seems as if the description of his stuff is interesting. He throws the knuckler, and apparently has the kind of confidence that Wakey has with it, but also mixes in mid eighties fastballs and cutters.

I wonder if when Wakes finally hangs 'em up, the Sox have plans for CZ to step right in.

I know there are several starters with a lot higher ceilings, but the Knuckleballer sets up the rest of the staff nicely. Especially when wedged between two power pitchers...

I know he's a minor leaguer, so feel free to move, but I was thinking in terms of a call up....if Wakes gets shelved for some reason.

For those of you who haven't read it, here's an article about Zink's strange journey through the Sox system. Very good read.

Definitely a good read. Here's his numbers in Pawtucket, only readable:

CODE
W L  ERA G GS CG SHO SV   IP  H  R ER HR BB SO GO/AO AVG  WHIP K/BB  K/9
3 1 2.76 6  6  0   0  0 29.1 27 12  9  2 11 21 1.41 .243  1.30 1.91 6.44

Mediocre WHIP, decent K rate. It also bears mentioning that his worst outing of the year was his first, so his last 5 starts are better than the above numbers indicate.

Edit: Since I was bored, here's how those numbers look ignoring his first start:
CODE
WHIP    K/BB    K/9
1.14    2.57    6.15

Much more acceptable WHIP & better K/BB. Small sample size (not to mention cherry-picked), but encouraging.
