According to Nick Cafardo on Boston.com

The Red Sox placed pitcher Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a broken fingernail on his right middle finger.

The Red Sox called up outfielder Jonathan Van Every from Pawtucket to replace Buchholz on the roster. Van Every was needed because of the wrist injury suffered by right fielder J.D. Drew in Tuesday night's loss to the Orioles.

I wonder who's going to pitch on Sunday? There could be another roster move planned... I suspect that Van Every goes back on Sunday and that they'll call up Masterson again...

The off day tomorrow makes this pretty easy:

Friday: Matsuzaka
Saturday: Wakefield
Sunday: Beckett (regular rest)
Monday: Lester (regular rest)
Tuesday: Drumroll........Bartolo Colon (scheduled to pitch Tuesday)

This is just a convenient way of swapping out Buchholz for Colon.

Also, doubt it would be Masterson, since I believe he is working tonight or tomorrow-- so unless they plan on giving him like 3 innings in a faux side session and calling him up with an 8-9 day layoff from his last real start, the Colon thing might make sense, although that's still iffy since he is likely not going to be able to go much past 5 IP for a couple more starts at least (went 3 in his return to PAW IIRC)

Also, Masterson has gotten knocked around a bit in AA since his spot start with the big club. I'm a huge fan, but he needs routine work and some work in AA to work out the kinks.

Honestly, it also wouldn't be shocking to see a Kyle Snyder sighting (provided his groin is fine after his last outing).

re: Van Every

His 08' stats w/ Pawtucket are respectable:

avg: .287
HR: 6
RBI: 20
He's 7 for his last 17 during his current 5 game hitting streak.

I just went back & read the Cambridge interview w/ Van Every from back in Jan - Q&A

I picked my own highlights:

David Laurila: Give us a scouting report on yourself.

Jonathan Van Every: I’m an extremely above-average defender who is capable of playing all three outfield positions. I would think that would be my main strength. As far as at the plate, I have plus power, but a lack of consistency has probably been my downfall in the past. I’ve shown signs of brilliance but have also shown times of turmoil when things have gone bad. The last couple of years, I’ve done a better job of staying consistent over the course of the season.

DL: Why did you decide to sign with the Red Sox organization?

JVE: It was basically the best offer we had. [They were willing to put me on the roster and give me an opportunity to contribute at the big league-level, and that’s what everyone wants. Every kid’s dream is to play in the big leagues. I felt this was the best fit for the situation I’m in, because there’s not a lot of outfield depth here at the centerfield spot.

Colon was only allowed to throw 3 innings in his last start (May 10th), I don't think he's yet stretched out enough to make a big league start.

I like the idea of calling up Zink. I mentioned him in a post back when Masterson was called up for a spot start in April too. He's putting up respectable #s down in Pawtucket this season. He's gone 6 or more innings in his last 4 starts & has a season ERA of .291 with just 12 walks in 43 innings pitched.

If Colon goes 5 innings on Thur. he will be the starter on Tue. the 20th.

How can you be an "extremely above-average defender?"
