Ian Browne - Sox promote reliever Smith; With Boston needing arms, Van Every sent down to Triple-A

BOSTON -- After sweeping the Brewers in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Red Sox made a roster move. They optioned outfielder Jonathan Van Every to Triple-A Pawtucket, while purchasing the contract of right-handed reliever Chris Smith from Pawtucket.
It will mark the first trip to the Major Leagues for the 27-year-old Smith, who was selected by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft.

In 10 games in Pawtucket, Smith was 1-2 with a 1.45 ERA. Of his 10 appearances, four were starts.

With the announcement of the starters for the KC series, gotta figure he'll be sent down after tomorrow night's game for Justin Masterson, who in turn will be sent back down for Colon after that.

I'm surprised they didn't make this move between games yesterday(and had Van Every play in game one to have a rested Drew and Crisp for game 2), but they won both so you can't complain.

Hopefully Smith can eat a few innings for us to keep the pen refreshed.
