OAKLAND - Some of the pre-game buzz surrounded the ESPN Sunday Conversation excerpt that Jon Lester's father, John, has lymphoma. Jon will see his father tonight when the Sox travel to Seattle after the game and after Lester pitches.

Terry Francona said he's known about Lester's father for a while and gave him a "heads-up" about what he had revealed to ESPN. Francona said Lester has been good about keeping him informed about things and said that Lester has handled the news with his usual poise.

Lester’s father also has cancer

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jon Lester [stats]’s father has a highly treatable form of cancer, the Boston Red Sox [team stats] left-hander and lymphoma survivor said in an interview with ESPN.

"It’s very different than mine," Lester told the network, which aired the interview Sunday before Boston’s first trip of the season to Lester’s native Seattle area.

"His is slow growing," Lester said of his father, John. "His is something that he’s going to die with, not die from. ... He’s doing really well. He has to go through the treatments ... but at the same time, it’s going to knock it down to where he can live a normal, healthy life."
