BALTIMORE -- The Red Sox have recalled Chris Carter from Pawtucket. The outfielder left Charlotte this morning and is headed to Fenway Park today.

The 25-year-old is in his first full season with the Red Sox organization. Boston acquired the 5-foot-10, 210-pounder from Washington last August to complete the trade that sent Wily Mo Pena to the Nationals.

Carter is hitting .316 with 10 homers and 35 RBI for the PawSox in 56 games this season. After the Red Sox acquired him last summer, he hit .234 with one home run and four RBI in 12 games for Pawtucket.

He was devastated last September when he was told he would not be a late-season call up for the Red Sox. Now he's getting his chance to make major-league debut.

Looks like he's the first to try and fill the void of papi.

Smart move - I like it.

He isn't very versitile in the field from what I've read, but is a damn good hitter...having Papi down and a DH spot open seems like the perfect time to give him a shot. The strikeout/walk ratio reminds me of the guy he was traded for, just not so dramatically lopsided. I don't see him being a long-term solution, but he's a guy to have on the bench if you want an extra base hit late against a tough rightie.

From his Stanford baseball page...

"Personal - Human Biology major • Son of Bill and Lori Carter • Contemplating a profession as a pediatric surgeon • Enjoys reading classical novels."

Interesting...

If I were Francona (and it's a good thing for the team that I'm not) I would be more apt to put Carter in the DH spot for home games, because Manny plays a much better LF in Fenway. On the road, I'd go with Manny as the DH and slip Ellsbury or Bailey (assuming he sticks around) in LF, and have Carter available off the bench in case we're behind and Lugo, Cora or Crisp are coming up to the plate with runners on. This might be splitting hairs somewhat, but since it's doubtful that Carter will DH every game, I think if you divy it up in this fashion, our probabilities for success are a little greater.

Regardless, I'm excited to see him play. I'm disappointed, however, that it's at the cost of losing Ortiz (hopefully, for only a month).

For some reason, I'm always fascinated by jersey numbers of call-ups.

I notice Carter wore #5 in Pawtucket...now, I doubt they give out Nomar's old number for quite some time, so he'll probably end up with a 50-something number.

It just makes me wonder if #5 is going to get the Jim Rice #14 "we can't officially retire it, but nobody's going to wear it "treatment

They said on the pre-game that Carter will wear number 51, which of course will one day be retired for either Heathcliff Slocumb or BK Kim.

Okay, i was an English major...What the hell is a classical novel? One written by Beethoven?

Did he mean Classic Novel? And if so is he really a moron in sheep's clothing? Or was he misquoted?

BK Kim

This has always annoyed me, and this is not a shot at you CT, because a lot of people do it. Also, yes, I know it's extremely petty, but how the hell did Byung-Hyun Kim become BK Kim? Wouldn't it just be BK, or B Kim, or BHK?

Staying on topic, can't wait to see this kid rake!!

Not only that, in Korean, it goes Last name first, so Kim is really his first name.

It's like how JD stands for David Jonathan Drew.

No, Kim is his family name. You are correct with respect to the ordering of their names, but when those names are Westernized they generally get re-ordered to conform to familiar conventions.
