Full Version: C.C. Sabathia

Gammo's latest indicates the Indians have been picking through organizations in the event they try and move Sabathia. A week ago, Jason Stark mentioned on Mike and Mike than the Indians were "very interested" in the Red Sox system.

QUOTE
The Indians are "thoroughly scouting" eight teams that may be interested in C.C. Sabathia, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers (the Mets may be another). Gammons agrees with Ken Rosenthal that Mark Shapiro may trade Sabathia soon to maximize his value. Gammons does not see the Yanks jumping in with Phil Hughes or a multi-prospect offer, unless Chien-Ming Wang's injury forces their hand. He does not think the Cubs or Phillies have the goods, but suggests the Rangers as a dark horse.

Sabathia doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the Sox (my personal opinion, of course-- given our current pitching depth and success of young talent), however-- with Wang's injury, we might be sitting in another golden opportunity to drive the price up for the Yankees.

Of course, it's also necessary for Theo to do due diligence on ANY Cy Young caliber pitcher than enters the market-- you never know when the price is right (and as always, my stance is that when a proven commodity shows up, you have to be at least be willing to consider parting with potential talent whose overall ceiling (and final talent level) are unknown)

The morning papers here in New York were warning that Wang my be out for the season, and in the next breath stating that the Yanks could get Sabathia. They probably have the prospects, although I would find it hard to believe that Shapiro would settle for a package that didn't include Hughes, and they certainly have the means to sign him at the end of the year. The recent Yankee surge to four games over .500 is no mirage--over a longer stretch they've won 16 of 24. Losing Wang is obviously a big blow, but it appears that Mussina will squeeze out at least one more good year, and Joba Chamberlain had a bona fide start his last time out. Sabathia has been pitching well after a rough start--he had another good game yesterday--and he would be a huge boost to New York.

While the Sox need for him is less obvious, I do adhere to the adage that there's no such thing as too much pitching. Colon has provided a boost while we've suffered rotation injuries, but he's no lock to pitch well enough to stay in the rotation all year. A return to 100% health for Schilling is no guarantee either. Dice-K is nearly ready to come back, but let's see how he bounces back from an injury. Inserting C.C. Sabtahia into the rotation is not a bad idea at all. He's only 29 and may be worth signing when he enters free agency; if we don't, I believe we would collect two draft picks when he signs elsewhere.

A rotation of Beckett/Sabathia/Dice-K/Lester/Wakefield or Masterson or Colon or Buchholz ain't too shabby.

Clearly we would have to give up a valuable young player or prospect or three. But it's certainly worth looking into, for the inherent value that Sabathia would bring, and to either block him from the Yanks or drive the price up for them. If the more pessimistic reports about Wang are trues, the Yanks need Sabathia, and we should definitely make sure they don't get him for Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy.

Its his potential contract demands that scare me off - and likely the Sox as well.

I agree.

otherwise, I'd say go for it.
the sure thing is always better than the prospect, IMO.
The Love Below
This was in the wrong forum. If C.C. becomes a member of the Sox, then we can start talking about him on the Sox forum.

PM me or the Barstaff with any questions.

Something I read today -- maybe in the LATimes? or NY Times? -- mentioned the Padres as a potential trade partner, with the Indians targeting Randy Wolf. That can't be right, can it? Isn't Wolf relatively old, and fairly bad?

(Pads were one of several teams mentioned -- Brewers seemed to be most likely)

I have read somewhere that Wolf is on the market as a backup option for teams that lose out on the Sabathia sweepstakes.

I also saw an article speculating that CC might be headed to Milwaukee for LaPorta. That would make a ton of sense, actually.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, he's going to the Brewers

A reliable club source said that the Brewers have a deal in place with Cleveland for left-hander C.C. Sabathia, contingent on the paperwork being done and medical records exchanged.

Look for Sabathia to make his debut for the Brewers Tuesday night at Miller Park against Colorado.

Dude, I was all over that one. How about some props, Anni?

LaPorta was mentioned a few days ago

Yes, but not by you in the appropriate thread. Take your haterade elsewhere.

Wolf was mentioned during tonight's broadcast, too.

I don't get it -- don't see the appeal.

Wolf comes cheap. Even the Yankees are in the mix, figuring he's lefthanded and better than Rasner (which isn't hard). They can get him for two medium-level prospects. Not Melancon or Austin Jackson but something a little less. Plenty of teams are interested in Wolf as the Padres will be holding a fire sale over the next two weeks.

Cheap doesn't get you into the playoffs, though.

No, but it shows the fans that you're doing something and/or is just out there as a low-cost desperation move. Maybe RW is a big enough improvement over your fifth starter for a couple months that it pushes you over the top, but it probably ain't gonna happen.

He's another Jeff Suppan scenario waiting to happen.

I like Milwaukee with their offense along with Sheets and Sabathia. I wouldn't want to face them in the playoffs.
