Gordon Edes - Colon to Disabled List

Red Sox righthander Bartolo Colon has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to stiffness in his lower back.

The Red Sox have recalled righthander Chris Smith from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his spot on the roster.

Colon twice came to the plate last night and he swung so hard in the fourth inning at a Cole Hamels changeup that his lower back stiffened up and he did not return to the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning.

"I think I hurt it on that swing where my helmet fell off," Colon said last night through first-base coach Luis Alicea, who translated.

Looks like Chris Smith will be around until Matsuzaka takes Colon's spot in the rotation over the weekend. And Masterson gets to stay a while longer...

This never should have happened.

The National League needs to join the 21st Century. They need to grow up and join the 21st Century.

I'm amazed that such a well conditioned athlete could hurt himself by swinging a bat.

The last time I saw a swing that bad was when John Goodman was reenacting you-know-who's swings in "The Babe". Man, that was difficult to watch. But I have to agree with you, Mr. NE. My swing is probably just as shitty and my back never hurts after getting out of the cage.

If he never throws another pitch for the Red Sox, it was still a steal. I'm just saying...

Also, the National League and interleague play sucks alien balls

This is 100% my fault. After he looked so bad in his first AB I screamed "Swing hard in case you hit it!" As he entered the box for his second AB.

I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. I take full responsibility.

Wow. Who would've thought Hank Steinbrenner would be so concerned about a Sox player? Is it true he's also supporting Coco's appeal?
