Kevin Thomas - Rock Cats outlast Sea Dogs in wild game; Both starters have problems throwing strikes, making for a lengthy game at Hadlock Field.

After two innings and 109 total pitches from both pitchers, Wednesday looked to be a long night of baseball at Hadlock Field.

It was.

...

Both starters, Kyle Aselton of New Britain and Matt Goodson of Portland, left early.

Goodson walked four batters in the first inning, giving up two runs. He allowed three more runs in the second, which included Eric Lis' two-run homer into the Sea Dogs' bullpen.

Goodson left with one out in the fourth after 79 pitches (48 strikes).

"He got into deep counts and had trouble finishing hitters," Beyeler said.

Staked to a 5-0 lead, Aselton couldn't hold it. He walked four in the second inning, including two with the bases loaded (RBI for Tony Granadillo and Jeff Corsaletti).

Portland scored three in the second and two in the third -- another bases-loaded walk to Granadillo and a Corsaletti RBI single to tie it.

...

Veteran relief pitcher Miguel Asencio, (6.44 ERA) is headed to Triple-A Pawtucket, filling the vacancy created by Chris Smith's promotion to Boston. Joining the Sea Dogs will be reliever T.J. Large, 25, from advanced Class A Lancaster. Large, a Sox 46th-round draft pick in 2005, was 2-1 in Lancaster with a 3.16 ERA (1.77 on the road). Portland put left-handed starter Dustin Richardson on the disabled list (shoulder tendinitis). Third baseman Andrew Pinckney (sore shoulder) missed his third straight game. Reliever Daniel Bard hit 99 mph on the Hadlock radar gun.

Kevin Thomas - Theo to watch Bowden

Michael Bowden (5-3, 2.24) starts for the Sea Dogs tonight. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, who took in Wednesday night's game at Hadlock Field, is expected to be back to watch one of his prized pitching prospects.

Michael Bowden has been dominating Double-A batters recently. In his last 10 games, he's 5-1 with a 1.40 ERA.

Bowden's over-the-top, jerky motion is deceptive, and his heavy fastball is hard to hit hard. While Bowden is only 21, and thus not necessarily ripe for a promotion, he may need the challenge of more experienced Triple-A batters.

As for the recent Sea Dogs moves, Asencio's prmotion has been anticipated. He is a minor league free agent with major league experience and a lot of Triple-A time. So, even though his ERA is 6.44, when there was an opening, he moved up.

Large, 25, a Sox 46th-round draft pick in 2005, was 2-1 in Lancaster with a 3.16 ERA. Away from Lancaster's wind-blown stadium, Large had a 1.77 ERA.

...

In Portland's Tuesday night loss, reliever Daniel Bard again had the Hadlock Field radar gun elevating. He hit 99 m.p.h. with three fastballs. In 2 innings, Bard allowed 1 H and 1 BB.

In Lancaster, Josh Reddick continued on his tear (3-for-4, now. 352) ... Blake Maxwell lowered his ERA to 1.54 with 3 IP of shutout relief (1 H, 3 K) ... Bryce Cox pitched a scoreless inning.

Recent third-round draft pick Kyle Weiland (Notre Dame) got in 2 innings work for Lowell (0 H, 0 BB, 2 K) ... Outfielder/DH Luis Sumoza went 2-for-5 with a homer. Sumoza, who turns 20 next month, was a bonus baby out of Venezuela, signing for $200,000 when he was 16. This is his first season away from the rookie leagues.

Eric Harding - Beazley's strong start doesn't stop spiral

The JetHawks got a solid start from pitcher Travis Beazley, but the offense couldn't follow it up and the JetHawks began the second half in the worst possible way - with a 5-2 loss to High Desert as the Mavericks finished off a sweep of the JetHawks at The Hangar.

Beazley has had first-inning troubles in the past, especially at home, but got off to a solid start on the mound for the JetHawks, getting through the first three innings allowing just one hit.

...

Beazley (3-8) pitched five innings, allowing six hits and five runs, but only one - the solo home run - was earned.

The JetHawks finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Chiang led off with a double into right-center.

Zak Farkes followed with an RBI triple off the glove of a hustling Peguero in left for their first run of the game.

After Diaz drew a walk, Matt Sheely's sacrifice fly to right allowed Farkes to score to make it 5-2.

...

Josh Reddick led off the second with a double into the right-field corner and, after catcher Jon Still was hit in the foot by a pitch, Chiang hit into a double play before Farkes struck out to end the inning.

"All I saw was a fastball-change up pitcher and we were unable to make adjustments," Epperson said.

"We have to do a better job of getting quality plate appearances here at home."

Willie T. Smith III - Ex-Drive manager in groove with Brewers

Former Wren High School standout Jason Place, a center fielder who played with the Drive last season, owns a .233 batting average for high Class A Lancaster. He has come on strong in June, however, hitting .322 with five home runs, two doubles and 15 RBI.

...

One of Buchholz's 2006 teammates, pitcher Michael Bowden is 5-3 with a 2.24 ERA. He has 72 strikeouts and 18 walks in 761/3 innings.

Centerfielder Bubba Bell (Greenville, 2006) is batting .291 with 10 home runs, 12 doubles, two triples and 31 RBI.

Right fielder Josh Reddick, the outfielder with the strongest arm in the minor league organization, is batting .338 with 12 home runs, five doubles, seven triples and 42 RBI for Lancaster. He spent most of 2007 and about two weeks this season with the Drive.

First baseman Lars Anderson (2007) follows Reddick with a .312 average. He has seven home runs and 16 doubles and 35 RBI.

Reliever Blake Maxwell (2006) owns a 2-2 record with a 1.63 ERA and one save for Lancaster.

Chaz Scoggins - Questionable call leads to loss for Spinners

LOWELL -- While everyone knows that the New York-Penn League's focus is on developing young players for the major leagues, sometimes it's easy to forget that the league's other purpose is to develop young umpires.

And, like the players at this level of the minor leagues, they have their good and bad days, too.

Had it not been for a questionable call on a checked swing in the eighth inning last night, this game might well have turned up in the victory column for the Lowell Spinners.

...

"He had a nice day on both sides of the ball," DiSarcina said of Gentile, the Red Sox' 49th-round draft pick out of Western Michigan. Gentile made three glittering defensive plays at second base.

Sumoza, who led the rookie Gulf Coast League in extra-base hits last year, belted a solo homer over the fence in left-center off Jose Duran in the seventh. But the Spinners managed just one more hit -- a two-out single by Ryan Dent in the bottom of the 11th -- the rest of the way.

Spinners fall in 11 innings

Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second when Zach Gentile drove in Ricardo Burgos with a ground out, then Kade Keowen scored on an error. The Spinners added another in the third on a single by Sumoza, and two more in the sixth when Gentile plated a run with a single and Keowen drove in another on a force play.

But the bullpen collapsed. Lance McClain allowed three runs in the eighth, and Guerra allowed one in the ninth and the winner in the 11th.

...

PAWTUCKET RED SOX

VIEW FROM THE TOP: Pawtucket's recent run - winners of 6 of their last 7 games - has moved them into a tie for 1st place in the IL North with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. This date of June 19 marks the latest Pawtucket has been in 1st place (or had a share of the division lead) in a season since they won the IL North in 2003. The PawSox (now at 44-30 on the year) have reached a season-high of 14 games over .500 for the first time since they ended that 2003 season with an 83-61 record.

MARKED IMPROVEMENT: The PawSox are currently 11 games better than they were last year at this point. Pawtucket (at 44-30) was 33-41 after 74 games last year - and then 33-42 on June 26 (T-4th, 8.0 GB). The PawSox are on pace to finish with 85 victories this season which would be a new franchise record. The club record is 83 wins in 2003 (83-61, 1st place).

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS: As the Boston Celtics proved this week in winning their 17th NBA title, defense does indeed often win championships. The PawSox presently have the 3rd-best fielding pct. in the IL at .982 (48 errors in 2,672 total chances) behind Louisville and Columbus (.983) and 2nd to Columbus in fewest errors (Sox have 48 errors while Clippers have 45).

The Sox are presently 3rd in Team ERA (3.74) after leading the League in that category at the end of May. The PawSox lead the IL in runs scored (390) and they are 2nd in both HR (94) and walks (277). Sox pitchers have allowed the 2nd-fewest hits in the League (603). Pawtucket has finished with the best ERA in the IL just once in franchise history back in 1999 when they posted a 4.01 ERA. Pawtucket has not led the IL in Team Batting since the League expanded to 14 teams in 1998.

CELEBRATING THE 2007 WORLD SERIES AT MCCOY: The PawSox, never shy about showcasing their affiliation with the World Champion Boston Red Sox who work 40 miles north of Pawtucket, RI, will celebrate the Red Sox 2007 World Series title in grand fashion this homestand with three different giveaway items for fans. Keith Farner - Mollica, Place remind fans how good they are

A year after playing in the spotlight of then-West End Field with the Greenville Drive, Place has turned things around with the high-Class A Lancaster (Calif.) Jethawks. Place struggled with strikeouts last season — his first full season stint in pro ball — and had the pressure of playing nightly in front of family and friends.

...

Pressure is something that Place has dealt with since high school, but could only escalate as he moves through the Red Sox farm system. Drafted No. 27 overall two years ago, Place is expected to play in Fenway Park in 2011. But until recently, he hadn’t found the consistency he had with the Golden Hurricanes when he hit .544, and batted leadoff to avoid intentional walks. But during a recent 10-game stretch, Place hit .317 with the Jethawks to raise his average to .239.

“For the first time in a long time,” Place said, “I’m taking the same swing on every pitch. I really feel like I have a chance to hit every pitch that’s thrown in the strike zone.”

Jessica Jacobsen - Former Grant pitcher drafted by Boston Red Sox

FOX LAKE – Many young baseball players dream of being a Major League Baseball player. For one Ingleside resident, that dream is one step closer to becoming true.

Former Grant pitcher Kyle Stroup was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 50th round at No. 1,504 – the last pick in the draft.

...

In addition to perfecting his pitching, Stroup also will maintain a strict workout routine leading up to when he goes to Fort Myers, Fla., on Aug. 24 with the rookie ball club the Gulf Coast Red Sox.

“That’s where I’m going to start my future,” Stroup said. “Hopefully I’ll sign and that’s where I’m going to be going.”
