Gibbons out, Gaston in as Blue Jays fire manager and coaches

Cito Gaston is back as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays after the team fired manager John Gibbons on Friday.
In an early afternoon e-mail, the team announced it was firing Gibbons along with first base coach Ernie Whitt, hitting coach Gary Denbo and third base coach Marty Pevey.

Gaston will take over for Friday night's game in Pittsburgh, with Dwayne Murphy as first base coach, Nick Leyva coaching third and former Blue Jays hitting coach Gene Tenace back in his old job.

What has Gaston been doing since the early 90's?

His wiki page lists nothing since he left the Jays after the 97 season.

According to this, he has been special assistant to the president and CEO.

Gaston, who has been special assistant to the president and CEO, had a 681-635 record as manager of the Blue Jays from 1989 to 1997. He led the team to four postseason appearances, starting with a pair of AL East titles in 1989 and 1991.

Interesting move. I wonder if roster changes are to follow??

And they've already updated his bio to show he was rehired on June 20, 2008.

Am I wrong in basically remembering Gaston as a not-very-good manager who seemed pretty disinterested by the end of his run in Toronto?

What exactly does he bring to an underachieving team? Or is this just a "remember how much you loved us here in Toronto back when we won?" move to get people to the ballpark?

I think there's a strong "remember the good old days" element to Gaston's selection, rominer. I would be shocked if he wanted to be the manager in 2009, so this is a pretty good way to keep the fans interested in what is clearly a train wreck of a season...bring in a guy who is popular but won't get in the way of finding the "right" candidate going forward.

"Hey Kids, here's what I'm talking aboot. Cito is back managing the Jays. Yeah, we're 43 games out of first - but Cito's back, eh?"

Really, Cito Gaston is going to put asses in seats?

JP just needs to fire himself and be done with it

First he needs to bring over Adam Dunn.

The only thing he's been right about was Adam Dunn. What he should have said about Dunn was that his statistics are bloated playing in that bandbox.

I don't think Gibbons is a bad manager. JP should be gone. He can talk his way out of almost everything. Maybe that's what's keeping him employed.
