Game time: 7:05 pm EDT
Scheduled starters: Dan Haren (7-4, 3.26) v. Josh Beckett (7-4, 3.87)
The game will be on NESN and on ESPN outside the Boston area.
Boston weather: 4 pm observation at KBOS: Wind out of the southeast at 8 mph, visibility 2.5 miles in light rain and mist, broken layers at 1,800 and 2,500 feet, overcast layer at 11,000 feet, temperature 68F, DP 65F
Forecast: Wet. The culprit is a slow-moving cold front with a lot of instability ahead of it. The front is in western NY now. There have been isolated severe thunderstorms in the area all day. At 4 pm, there's a line of moderate showers with some embedded thunderstorms just east of the Springfield area, and another line forming at the MA/NY border. These storms have tended to run out of steam as they move east, but there's still a chance for rain. There's some clearing in central NY, but another line with some severe storms out in western NY, right ahead of the front.
There's a chance they could play tonight, but not without some rain delays and interruptions.

From the Sox website:
The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for a possibility of scattered rain showers during the afternoon and evening hours.
The Fenway Park gates will open at the regularly scheduled time of 5:05 p.m., and the Red Sox hope that tonight's game with the Arizona Diamondbacks will begin at the scheduled time at 7:05 p.m. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast and the possibility of delay.
This forecast is of course subject to change as the day progresses. Additional updates will be provided as necessary.

Red Sox 5:30 update:
The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for a possibility of thunderstorms during the early evening hours. Weather conditions are then expected to improve in the area.
The Fenway Park gates opened at the regularly scheduled time of 5:05 p.m., and the Red Sox remain hopeful that tonight's game with the Arizona Diamondbacks will begin at the scheduled time at 7:05 p.m. However, the Red Sox want to alert our fans to the current forecast and the possibility of delay.
This forecast is of course subject to change as the afternoon and evening progresses. Additional updates will be provided as necessary.
It does look like there will be a break in a couple hours, but there's another line of storms just ahead of the front right now. The leading edge of that line is at Rochester. I wouldn't count on nine dry innings.

Rain delay!
No announcement as to when the game will start.
It's raining at Fenway now, and the back edge of the rain is out around I 495. It'll be at least an hour (from 7:40 pm) before it clears.
Get ready for a late night!
Update:
They're going to try to start at 7:35. I think they want to get going because they know there's more rain on the way. There's still some light rain, but the heavy stuff is off to the east.

Anyone else thinks this is the lineup we're gonna show if we head for the playoffs? I'm very pessimist about the Papi situation.

ESPN announcer tonight said he'll be out at least another couple of weeks. I wish (just another couple or three or four weeks).
Josh putting the ball where he wants to so far.

Not that this is quite the same circumstance, but bunting someone to 3rd with 0 out remains among the dumbest plays possible in baseball.

I hope that's correct... The Sox, and any other club for that matter, usually keep the worst injuries from our knowledge. I don't mean to be pessimist, but I just have been since someone mentioned that possibility to me.

Well, if he had bunted well, Ellsbury and his speed would be in 2nd by now. Every play has 2 sides.

Whatever these announcers say...Upton is hitting 100 something since May: he gets a double; Varitek is 0 for 24: he doubles; Pedroia never strikes out: he K's. Pulling out what hair is left...

Christ, Haren isn't this good. Hard to believe the Sox are second in runs in the AL, watching the last few games. We need the big man!

Their thirdbaseman catches a screamer off Manny's bat and our shortstop lets one go off his glove. Naturally, it's Lugo.
Yeah, Manny missed too many very hittable pitches off Pena. Manny is sucking lately. Maybe he's heading down. I said maybe. Maybe not. Right now, the offense is hurting bad.

No. He crushed that ball, just happened to be right at the third baseman.
I am really, really, really starting to like Aardsma.
Edit: of course the walks need to stop.

Someone is criticizing Manny for an AB where he knocked the shit outta the ball?
Man this game has pissed me off beyond belief. I'm done with Lugo -- give me Lowrie NOW.

He had at least three cookies waist high over the middle of the plate before that and could only foul them off. A great hitter doesn't miss all three of them unless he's struggling.
