Robert Lee - PawSox 7, Braves 6: Bases-loaded walk wins it in 10th

Jeff Bailey to the rescue again. One night after Bailey hit two home runs to help Pawtucket to an 8-6, 10-inning victory over Columbus, Bailey led the first-place PawSox (48-31) to a 7-6, 10-inning triumph over defending Governor’s Cup champion Richmond (38-40) by going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 walks.

With the score 6-6, the bases loaded and the count full, Bailey walked to force in the winning run (Bryan Pritz).

...

Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said of pitcher Charlie Zink, who had the longest outing by a PawSox pitcher this season (8 1/3 innings, 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 walks) and a Triple-A career-high 10 strikeouts: “I thought he pitched a (heck) of a game.”

Robert Lee - PawSox’ Pritz trying to follow in Bailey’s footsteps

"Bails, I don’t even know what to say about him because he’s swung the bat well for quite an extended period of time,” Johnson said. “He’s really given himself an opportunity to drive the ball whenever he goes to the plate.”

Bailey was 3-for-4 last night with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored in Pawtucket’s 10-inning, 7-6 triumph over Richmond. Bailey walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to force in the winning run. He has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.

Pritz, 25, is trying to bring his game up to Bailey’s level. So far, Johnson has been impressed by everything Pritz, an outfielder, has accomplished in his short time with the PawSox.

Pritz, who has a seven-game hitting streak, is batting .462 (12-for-26) in his last seven games, with three doubles and two RBI. He was 2-for-5 last night.

“Pritz has earned his playing time,” Johnson said. “I’m very impressed with him right now.”

Mike Scandura - Dogs put finishing touch on good start; Portland gets five strong innings out of Matt Goodson and beats the Defenders on the road.

NORWICH, Conn. — The Portland Sea Dogs got a strong start from Matt Goodson and beat the Connecticut Defenders 5-3 Monday night at Dodd Stadium.

Goodson (4-4), who's coming back from surgery last year to repair a torn ulnar nerve, shut out Connecticut on two hits over five innings. He walked two, struck out four and threw 50 of 81 pitches for strikes.

"Every time out, he's got around 80 pitches to work with and he realizes that, whether it's one inning or six or seven," Sea Dogs Manager Arnie Beyeler said. "He was very efficient tonight and worked to contact very well.

"He utilized his change-up very well, which made his fastball look pretty good later in the game. He's got the slider he can go to when he needs it. Overall, it was a very impressive outing.

...

Bubba Bell led off the first inning with a walk, Ryan Khoury singled, and Jeff Corsaletti crushed a two-run double off the center-field fence.

Mickey Hall singled with one out in the second and Iggy Suarez beat out an infield hit. They advanced on a passed ball before Hall scored on Bell's sacrifice fly.

Kevin Thomas - Lyon finally bites back

In Triple-A Monday night, Pawtucket got another extra-inning walk-off win. This one was not so dramatic, with Jeff Bailey drawing a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning, for the 7-6 win ... Bailey was also 3-for-4 (now .320) ... Bryan Pritz, who scored the winning run, was 2-for-5 (.298) ... Charlie Zink did not have one of his better outings, but he did go 8 1/3 innings (5 H, 2 HR, 5 R, 4 BB, 10 K).

Portland got a win with nice performances from infielder Ryan Khoury (3-4, 2 RBI), Jeff Corsaletti (2-4, 2 RBI) and Iggy Suarez (2-4, 2 runs) ... Matt Goodson pitched 5 scoreless innings (2H, 2 BB, 4 K) ... Beau Vaughan struck out 3 in 1 1/3 innings for his seventh save.

Elsewhere, Ryan Kalish (.290) went 2-for-4 for Greenville, and Michael Almanzar (.421) was 2-for-4 in the Gulf Coast League.

Willie T. Smith III - Drive's luck runs out

Although Greenville banged out 10 hits, it did a poor job getting them in key situations as the Crawdads went ahead early and never looked back.

“They did a nice job scattering our hits,” Greenville manager Kevin Boles said. “We had a lot of groundball outs. I don’t know how many we hit, but it was quite a few.”

...

Greenville scored a run in the second to claim a 1-0 lead when catcher Luis Exposito scored from third on an infield out by first baseman Will Vasquez. Exposito reached on a single to right and advanced to third on a David Mailman double to left.

Spinners game suspended in 12th

The Lowell Spinners and host Oneonta Tigers battled through 11 1/2 innings last night before their New York-Penn League game was suspended by heavy thunderstorms with the score tied 3-3.

The two teams will pick up this game and play it through to its conclusion beginning at 6 tonight, with the regularly-scheduled game to follow at Damaschke Field.

...

The teams traded first-inning runs, Lowell scoring when Ryan Dent singled, stole second, took third on a long flyout and crossed on a Carlos Fernandez-Oliva ground out.

The Spinners inched ahead 2-1 in the sixth on a leadoff double by Mitch Dening and 2-out RBI double by DH Ricardo Burgos.

...

Drake Britton started on the mound and tossed 5 solid innings of 3-hit ball for Lowell. Daniel Butler followed with 2 frames of 1-hit, shutout relief and Charlie Rosario finished up.

Joe Perez - Defenders Report: Good, bad come from loss to Portland

Bubba Bell walked to start the game and Ryan Khoury singled before Jeff Corsaletti’s double to center drove home both runners. Martinez looked as if he settled down; retiring the next three batters, including two on strikeouts.

Any good feelings that existed at the end of the first vanished quickly in the second.

Mickey Hall and Ignacio Suarez connected on back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Bell’s sac fly and Khoury’s single to right made the score 4-0. The next batter, Corsaletti, lined a pitch off of Martinez’s right triceps, his throwing arm.

Brendan McGair - PawSox work OT for win

Zink went 8 1/3 innings (a season-high by a PawSox starter) while striking out a career-best 10. He was touched for five runs (four earned) and two back-to-back home runs in the sixth.

Somebody has to take the credit for Zink’s renaissance season to date, and the obvious choice is to pat the pitching coach on the back.

Not so fast, says Sauveur. “I think it’s the confidence he has,” he said. “It’s not me. It’s him.”

There is one area where Sauveur accepts praise. After Zink’s first start of the season (six runs in three innings on April 5), Sauveur suggested Zink expand his pitching selection by sprinkling in more change-ups.

“It’s not a pitch he throws 10-15 times a game, but he does have it in his arsenal,” said Sauveur. “He said the day I made the suggestion that he used to have a nice change-up.
