Robert Lee - PawSox 6, Braves 1: Hansack, PawSox cruise to victory

Pawtucket teed off for nine hits and received multi-hit efforts from Dusty Brown (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 run scored, and 1 walk) and Sean Danielson (2-for-3, 1 RBI), as well as top-notch pitching from Devern Hansack (3-8) who limited Richmond to just two hits in eight innings while fanning four, walking none, and not allowing a run.

Brown started the PawSox onslaught in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double down the third base line. Bryan Pritz then drove-in Keith Ginter with an RBI fielder’s choice to the shortstop to make it 2-0.

Jed Lowrie crushed his third home run of the season to right field to give Pawtucket a 3-0 cushion in the bottom of the fourth. That was the start of a four-run fourth inning for the PawSox. Brown continued his strong day in the fourth inning with a two-run triple down the right-field line. He scored on Danielson’s RBI single up the middle. That was enough offense for Hansack and reliever Jose Vaquedano (1 inning, 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts).

Robert Lee - PawSox express clicking on all cylinders

The PawSox lead the league in runs scored (417) and are second in home runs (104), walks (296) and team batting average (.270). They were last in the league in team batting last season (.254).

“We just feel like we have enough power throughout the lineup to compete with anybody,” Jeff Bailey said. “If we get behind by two or three runs, we don’t think that is a big deal. If we get a couple of guys on, lately we’ve gotten a lot of clutch hitting.”

...

Bailey is having an All-Star season. He is among the league leaders in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored (61), batting average (.315), extra-base hits (41), home runs (23) and RBI (57).

Pauley, who will pitch tomorrow, leads the team and is second in the league in wins (9-2). He also has a 3.78 ERA.

Mike Scandura - Dogs' pitcher stays on track despite homer; Michael Bowden buckles down after a tying home run and helps Portland get past Connecticut

NORWICH, Conn. — The worst thing the Connecticut Defenders could have done to Michael Bowden occurred in the fourth inning Tuesday night, when Ryan Rohlinger hit a two-run homer that tied a game against the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-3.

Bowden then retired 10 of his last 11 batters – the only Defender who reached was Ben Copeland on a sixth-inning infield hit – as Portland won, 6-5.

Bowden's body language revealed how upset he was at allowing the homer and how intent he was on finishing off the last two batters, which he did by striking out Carlos Sosa and Adam Witter.

"He's a bulldog guy, and he was upset at the breaking ball he hung (to Rohlinger)," Manager Arnie Beyeler said. "He's the kind of guy who'll go out and bury some people.

...

That Bowden has been on the "right track" this season is an understatement.

For example:

He's allowed fewer hits (58) and walks (19) than innings pitched (89).
Including Tuesday's game, he's walked only eight in his last 12 starts.
In his last 70 1/3 innings, his ERA is 1.66.

Kevin Thomas - Smith a picture of perseverance

Smith was set to begin a fifth season in Portland this season. That was not the plan when Smith was drafted in the fourth round in 2002. But then came two arm surgeries (one after an ATV accident, the other shoulder surgery) and Smith looked like he would just fade away in the minors.

But Smith kept on. Before he could pitch for Portland this year, he was sent to Pawtucket because of an injury to Bartolo Colon ... Interestingly, Smith got his latest call to the majors because of another injury to Colon, and then a DL assignment for Mike Timlin.

Smith, 27, is one of five players left in the Sox organization from the 2007 draft - Jon Lester (second round), Smith, third base \man Chad Spann (5th), Brandon Moss (8th) and pitcher Jose Vaquedano (35th).

Drive slip in Augusta

The Drive got on the scoreboard first when Jered Stanley singled to right with two outs in the first inning, scoring Yamaico Navarro.

Greenville increased the lead to 2-0 in the second when Kristopher Negron lined a two-out single to center to score Oscar Tejeda.

...

The GreenJackets sealed the win with four runs in the eighth.

Jose Capellan (1-1) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in four innings to take the loss for Greenville.

Spinners split pair on the road

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Lowell Spinners split a pair of New York/Penn League road games against the Oneonta Tigers last night, winning the completion of a Monday night suspended game, 4-3, in the 14th inning before dropping the regularly-scheduled nightcap, 4-1.

...

In the completion of the thunderstorm-suspended game, Lowell pushed across an unearned run in the top of the 14th inning to secure the victory.

Will Middlebrooks opened the 14th by reaching on a throwing error, taking second on an infield grounder and scoring the deciding run when Mitch Dening's tapper resulted in another throwing error.

Winning pitcher Michael Tomoleoni (1-0) worked the final 3 innings and retired the Tigers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 14th.

In the 4-1 nightcap, Lowell out-hit Oneonta, 6-3, but stranded 10 runners on base.

The lone Spinners' run came when Ryan Dent walked, Dening was hit by a pitch and Dent crossed on a groundout by Ronald Bermudez.

P.J. Harmer - Gosse powers O-Tigers

Middlebrooks scored on a throwing error from Gosse in the top of the 14th inning and the Spinners held on for a victory in the continuation of Monday's game, which had been suspended because of rain after 11 innings with the score tied at 3.

Middlebrooks opened the 14th reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Wyatt. First baseman Wade Lamont couldn't scoop Wyatt's throw in the dirt.

...

Rafael Gil then hit a hard shot at Oneonta pitcher Anthony Shawler (0-1), who couldn't hang onto the ball. Shawler bobbled it slightly but recovered to get Gil at first. Middlebrooks moved to second on the play. After a walk to Zach Gentile put runners on first and second, Shawler got Dent to fly out to center.

Dening then grounded to second baseman Gosse, whose throw to the left side of first pulled Lamont off the base as the ball went to the fence, allowing Middlebrooks to score.

Michael Tomoleoni (1-0) put Oneonta down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Richie Lentz Leads JetHawks Contingent at All-Star Game

MYRTLE BEACH, SC) -Three Lancaster JetHawks players earned the honor of participating in the annual All-Star game between the best of the California League and the best of the Carolina League. Starting third baseman Jorge Jimenez, designated hitter Jon Still, and relief pitcher Richie Lentz all represented the California League at this year's contest at the home of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in South Carolina. The game featured strong pitching from both leagues until a two-run homer in the eighth inning led the Carolina League to a 3-1 victory.

All three JetHawks saw time in the game. Lentz was the most successful, striking out two Carolina League All-Stars in a scoreless fifth inning as a relief pitcher. Jimenez and Still each played the whole game while going 0-4.

Owen Poole - Fast Track to the Majors; Sox prospect Bowden is shining for the Sea Dogs

These are indeed the salad days for the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Bowden (7-3), but the 21-year old has his sights set higher, and with the way he's pitched recently, for good reason.

A quick look at some of the pitchers the Red Sox have drafted and developed in recent years would make any minor league hurler glad to be a part of the organization: Justin Masterson, Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and Craig Hansen.

”I was the first high schooler out of them, so I know my path is going to be a little longer than theirs,” Bowden said inside the Portland clubhouse on Tuesday. “They had three years of college under their belt and I'm a little bit younger. I need a little more experience before I can move up. I'm not surprised the way the Red Sox have been handling me and my development.”

But Bowden has been doing everything possible to make the parent club take notice.

He entered Tuesday's game against the Defenders with a 6-3 record and a 2.20 ERA, but peeling back another layer reveals even more impressive stats. Over his last 10 starts, those numbers improve to 5-1 and 1.40.
