Jim Mandelaro - PawSox 10, Red Wings 0: Van Every hits three home runs as PawSox roll

The PawSox drilled six home runs — three by No. 9 hitter Jonathan Van Every — and blew out the Red Wings in a game yesterday called with two outs in the bottom of the eighth after a 39-minute rain delay. Pawtucket managed only eight hits in the game, but six went over the fences. Jed Lowrie added two homers and former Red Wing Gil Velazquez had one.

...

The six home runs made life easier for Hansack, but the right-hander kept the Red Wings in check throughout. He allowed only two hits in seven innings and struck out the side in his final inning. He threw 93 pitches — 66 for strikes.

...

Lowrie extended his hitting streak to nine games and raised his batting average to .287. He’s hitting 13-for-37 (.351) during the streak.

Kevin Thomas - Dogs silenced again; Trenton pitching holds Portland hitters in check long enough for the Thunder to rally for the second day in a row.

Portland has scored two runs – one earned – in its last 16 innings against the Thunder, who lead the league with a 2.89 ERA and overcame deficits in the last two games.

"(The pitchers) have done a wonderful job of keeping us in the game," said Trenton outfielder Edwar Gonzalez.

Gonzalez hit a two-run homer against Michael Bowden (7-4) to give Trenton a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.

...

Portland created a few chances against Trenton starter Phil Coke (7-3) but left seven runners on base. The Sea Dogs managed only one hit over the last three innings against reliever Steven Jackson.

...

Daniel Bard relieved Bowden, and Joe Muich worked a nine-pitch walk. After Reegie Corona walked on 10 pitches to load the bases, Bard then got a strikeout and a flyout, but not before he threw 29 pitches and was done.

"When a guy goes out and throws 30 pitches in one inning, then someone has to go out and pick his (next) inning up," Beyeler said.

That ended up hurting Portland. Mike James pitched two perfect innings, but tired in the ninth. He allowed four hits and left with two runners on and the score 5-2.

Daniel Haigwood relieved and gave up a three-run homer to Jose Tabata.

Kevin Thomas - Rays have best pitchers ready

Pawtucket won 10-0 in Rochester with all the runs coming on homers - 3 by Jon Van Every (5 RBI), 2 by Jed Lowrie (4 RBI), and a solo shot from Gil Velazquez ... Devern Hansack remained hot on the mound (7 IP, 2 H, 8 K) ... in his last 3 starts, Hansack has not allowed an earned run, giving up 8 hits and 2 walks in 21 innings, while striking out 19.

In Lancaster, the wind was blowing 28 m.p.h. out to right. Jon Still (grand slam), Josh Reddick and Reid Engel all homered ... Reddick went 3-for-5 and is now at .351 ... The JetHawks won 16-9.

Greenville's 19-year-old outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin went 4-for-5, including a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, in a 13-12 win.

Chaz Scoggins - Bobby Kielty's season: When it rains, it pours

The Spinners' 2.65 ERA is fourth in the 14-team league. But the Spinners are dead last in hitting with a .196 team average and 12th in runs scored. Spinners hitters have collected just 79 hits in 12 games while striking out 104 times. They have not hit a home run in eight games.

"You just hate to waste good pitching performances, because the guys have pitched great," said DiSarcina.

Brock Huntzinger was named NY-PL Pitcher of the Week for throwing 10 scoreless innings in his first two starts.

"Guys are trying to hit three-run homers when all they need is to get a basehit," said DiSarcina.

Center fielder Rafael Cabreja, who finished strongly for the Spinners last summer and finished at .250-2-25 in 61 games, has rejoined the Spinners after being on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. ... The Red Sox also announced yesterday that they have signed righthanded reliever Bryan Price, their sandwich pick (45th overall) in the draft earlier this month, and assigned him to Lowell.

Price was 4-4 with two saves and a 3.72 ERA in 30 games for Rice University. He struck out 54 batters in 48 1/3 innings and helped Rice reach the College World Series. ... Bruce Hurst, a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame who was one of the stars of the 1986 World Series, is now a roving pitching instructor for the organization and is in Lowell for a couple of days helping out with the Spinners.

Dan Goldberg - Players' lives more than baseball; Saving and cleaning all part of goal

Like most Antelope Valley residents, the increasing cost of food and gas has put pressure on the JetHawks. Minor league salaries are set based on experience and level, and a first-year player in High-A earns slightly more than $1,000 a month, and only for the seven months of the season.

Some of the JetHawks received large signing bonuses, which of course changes their perspective. Those range from Chris Province's $120,000 to Jason Place's $1.2 million. However, they are the minority. Of the 25 men on the JetHawks' roster, 15 received little more than a plane ticket when they signed.

"I can't save hardly anything," said outfielder Daniel Nava, who pointed out how thrilled he was to have the opportunity to pursue his life-long dream, and said his current financial situation was really of no concern in light of what he was trying to achieve. "Obviously, the long-term goal is where the payoff is."

That's the major leagues, where the 2008 minimum salary is $390,000.

Until then, however, there is a lot of scrimping, saving and living like college students with all the shared responsibilities that entails - like cleaning.

Catcher Jon Still admitted to being slightly messier than his roommate and fellow catcher Zak Farkes would like.

"He does clean up after me and (second baseman Chih-Hsien) Chiang," Still said. "But he yells at us, so it's a double-edged sword."

Jon Still Helps Slam JetHawks to 16-9 Win

(LANCASTER, CA) - Fans got a sense in the first inning Sunday that it would be the kind of game where anything can happen. The first three JetHawks batters all reached base and Jon Still brought them all in with a grand slam. That was just the beginning as eight of the nine JetHawks knocked a hit and scored, and seven of the JetHawks drove in a run as Lancaster salvaged a series split by defeating first-place Inland Empire 16-9. The 16 runs matches the most production from the JetHawks this season.

Still's grand slam was just the first stage of a record-tying day for the Lancaster designated hitter. The slugger added a single in the third inning, a RBI double in the fifth, and a RBI walk in the eighth. His six RBI matched a career-high, as did his four runs scored.

...

Derrick Loop made his Lancaster debut and earned the win in relief of Blake Maxwell. Maxwell started in place of Adam Mills. Mills became the fifth JetHawks player this season to be promoted to AA Portland.

International League Player Of The Week

DEVERN HANSACK, Pawtucket Red Sox IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Pawtucket right-hander Devern Hansack entered the week with a 2-8 record and 5.40 ERA, but in consecutive starts against Richmond and Rochester he was flat out dominant. Hansack turned in a pair of two-hit gems, totaling 15.0 innings and striking out 12 batters without surrendering a run or a walk. Hansack's 8.0 inning victory Tuesday night against Richmond was his longest outing of the year by a full inning, and just the second time he allowed less than three hits. He followed that with a 7.0 inning, eight-strikeout performance yesterday in Rochester, exacting revenge after losing to the Red Wings back on May 23 (5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER). His eight strikeouts matched a season high, helping the PawSox increase their lead in the IL North to 5.0 games. His two victories this week represented the first two times he didn't allow a walk this season.

29-year-old Devern Hansack is in his third season with the Red Sox, coming after a two-year absence from professional baseball in which he worked as a lobsterman. Last season he went 10-7 for Pawtucket with a 3.61 ERA, and earned IL Pitcher of the Week honors June 18-24. Hansack is a native of Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua.
