Someone should explain to him that there are seven guys behind him, all wearing gloves. Pitch to contact! Sometimes I think I'd rather have a root canal than watch that man pitch. It's that painful.

As someone who's just had a root canal completed I can tell you that you're exaggerating
in extremis
Watching Dice-K pitch is FAR more painful and they don't provide anything to numb the pain.
Edit: I'm predicting something regrettable later in this game if we don't get something done against Kazmir soon. One of those "if only we'd scored some runs when he looked so lousy early on" - while we lose, again, by one run type of recriminations.

At best, it was a technically legit call that falls way outside the realm of what actually gets called these days. It's like calling a palming violation on a guy who's walking the ball up the floor in basketball. Guilty? Yes. Ever, ever, ever called? No.
With the way Pedroia is hitting, that call cost not just Varitek's run...but the two (or more) additional runs that would have followed.

The runner slid into second trying to break up the double play, and strayed too far away from the bag for the second base umpire's liking.

Lugo broke up a double play but was called for interference, so Ellsbury was out at first base.
Lugo slid pretty far to the right of second base, but close enough that he probably could have reached 2nd base with his left hand. (Had he tried...which, granted, he did not.)
I've seen much worse not get called for interference. The call was either an anomaly or else it was based more in trying to prevent more bad blood between these teams than in what typically gets called. If they want to start calling that, that's fine. But as a one-shot deal, the timing and situation were a bit conspicuous.

Sure looks as if only one of these teams considers this a big series. Then agin, it IS a much more important series for the Rays. Still, they cannot blow this lead and they cannot get swept.

It wasn't the most outrageous call ever. It's just that for the same reason (Sox/Rays) that the umps might be more inclined to make that call, I'm less inclined to forgive it.
As for the deal with the bullpen...Jesus, this is embarrassing.

I wonder how closely that 101 corresponds with the last time Tek missed time with "flu-like symptoms"?
Maybe not at all. It just seems like he's so late on everything, after being at least halfway decent for awhile this season, that maybe there's some lingering weakness from being sick a few times this year. Falling off a cliff from one year to the next makes sense. In mid-season, it's just weird.
