Royal Rooters > THE COOLER > ROYAL ROOTERS ARCHIVES > 2008 REGULAR SEASON GAME THREADS
RedSoxAnni
Game time: 7:05 pm

Scheduled starters: Jon Lester (6-3, 3.48) v. Andy Pettitte (9-5, 3.98)

The game will be on NESN.

NY weather: 4 pm observation at KLGA: Wind out of the southwest at 18 mph, with gusts to 25 mph, visibility 10 miles, few clouds at 7,500 feet, temperature 92F, DP 53F

Forecast: A cold front is crossing through eastern NY now, and is moving slowly from northwest to southeast. There are showers and thundershowers along the frontal boundary. It's raining in Albany and in Scranton at 4 pm. That area of showers, however, looks like it will pass north of NYC, and probably will result in only light drizzle. However, showers further to the west, in central PA, are likely to affect the NYC area later tonight.

There's a chance for some rain, and maybe thunderstorms, this evening, but they should be able to play the game.

The wind has been gusting into the low 20 mph range for most of the day, and it will continue to be windy this evening. The wind will be blowing out toward left.

A sweet Jeterian play puts us up 1-0... thanks Derek.

edit: Wow, Damon is a huge sissy. Not that I didn't already know that.
Wakefield 49
Captain Clutch with Gold Glove defense!

2-0 now, thanks to Damon's girly arm.
czeckswing
Mike Lowell is no Manny Ramirez.
Wakefield 49
Now hopefully Lester can keep his pitch count down. And of course, the run count.

... MANNY IS TEH SUCK LOLZ
Wakefield 49
God ****ing damn it... Lester's going to be out of this game faster than Matsuzaka last night. They better score a ton of runs or this will be 6 straight.
Renton
Pull your head out of your ass, Bell. That was a double play, yet there are two runners on and no outs.

And another botched call at first. Abreu out. **** this officiating crew already. **** them in their stupid asses.
Leephus Pitch
Only Lugo could have screwed up that DP ball.
ONLY Lugo.
Wakefield 49
Well, it's been better so far for Lester. Hope he keeps it up.
Wakefield 49
So how afraid of the wall is Abreu?
rominer
Manny sucks.

Anyone else would have scored on that ground rule double.

Yet another example of "Manny being Manny". Can't the Sox just dump him already?
Renton
How stupid can you two be? He couldn't score on the ground-rule double because he was on first.

Another fan blinded by Manny love. If he was hustling down the line he could have taken second on his walk.

That is because he is not a young product of this system. Old, over-paid, spoiled brat. DFA him....again.

Dude....

Also, it's amazing that Lester can shut down this offense a week after getting raked by that sad sack of a team in Houston (Especially while I sit in the stands wearing a Lester jersey).
Wakefield 49
In all seriousness, speaking of young products of the system, Lester has pitched a hell of a game so far. I really do love watching this kid pitch when he's in the strike zone.

ETA: Screw you Lugo. You spend all year sucking at everything you do, the LEAST you can do is sprint down the line on a passed ball on strike three. I hope Francona pulls him.

No, really. He probably could have with Posada behind the plate.
Renton
Well on YES they're crying about Manny not being suspended for the incident. Along with "can't you go to jail for something like that some places?"

Stick to stupid commentary on your own team, dooshes.
Wakefield 49
I'm pretty sure they shouldn't talk about things that can put you in jail with that steroid farm they're running over there.
MakeMineMoxie
Time for a garbage time HR by Alice?

Edit: Or not! Ha ha ha ha!
Renton
Who the hell is this home plate ump? Wally Bell? He supersucks.

And finally a voice of reason on YES. Don't know who he is, but he said you cant just blurt out that Manny should be suspended because you don't know the situation. Basically made Kay and the other jackass look as stupid as they sound.

EDIT: I think it was Leiter who was the only guy with his head not up his ass on that one.
rominer
Thank you slow mo replay on Tivo.

I actually thought that Posada might have had an argument there. It looked weird in real time. I thought maybe it did hit the wall first.

But no way. It hit about 4 inches down in JD's glove. Absolutely a clean catch.
MakeMineMoxie
Nice catch, JD. Too bad you don't care!

Man, I love watching Lester pitch. I'm really glad Theo didn't ship him to Minn for Santana.

Excluding all other considerations (contract, other players involved, future performance)...I'd have to think twice about even swapping them straight-up for '08 based on performance to date. Santana is still Santana...but Lester really is improving all the time. (As long as Westlake isn't at the game)

Santana: 7-7, 3.01 ERA (136 ERA+)

Lester (excluding tonight): 6-3, 3.48 (123 ERA+)

I hope that base hit sparks Tek to get out of the funk.

And Lugo has to prompty screw it up.

6-0 into the bottom of the 8th? I like our chances, even with the pen we have.

Agreed. And I think we are just starting to see what Lester can be.
czeckswing
Lester really knows how to make the bullpen look great. Keep them on their tails.
Wakefield 49
What a start by Jon Lester. He gave this team exactly what they needed tonight. Great job. I hope he gets to finish it, but I have a feeling we might see Timlin in the 9th.

But the 4 hits he gave up are Manny's fault.
Wakefield 49
Excellent, I was wrong about Timlin coming in.
czeckswing
If the Sox could just throw about 20 complete games in a row I'm sure the pen would be just fine.
ivebeentruped
Now that was just what the doctor ordered.

I will pose this question right now:

Which is more impressive? The no hitter against a AA quality lineup? Or this very efficient shutout against a talented (if frequently lifeless) Yankee lineup?

This was good stuff tonight. That's for sure.
MakeMineMoxie
Thank you, Jon Lester!

Even with a win you find something to whine about?

Bitching from ignorant trolls aside, this was a big win and it saved the pen. Now let's see Beckett go deep tomorrow. Good to see Lester bounce back nice from a mediocre effort last week in Houston.

Tonight. I think the no-no gave him the confidence to throw a game like this.

A No-Hitter is a No-Hitter, so I'll say that

But the importance of this game tonight cannot be understated. Not only did he shut out the Yankees in Yankee Stadium, but after the total bullpen meltdown last night, going all 9 to give the rest of the staff the night off is just great.

I've been skeptical of Lester, even after the No-No because despite the good record, I felt he wasn't going deep enough and leaving it in the pen's hands too much, but after tonight he has my full confidence.
GreenBud
Excellent start from our season's best pitcher. Perfect timing.

The only two starters for the Sox this season who have averaged more IP/GS than Lester (who is now at 6.17) are Wakefield (6.41) and Beckett (6.73).

He hasn't been going as deep into games as some workhorses, but he hasn't been leaving every start after 5 either...

Jon Lester, stopping the 5-game losing streak by throwing a complete-game shutout in Yankee Stadium.

Very, very impressive.
The Ghost of Ned Martin
Great game by Lester. As others have already noted, this was badly needed. Watching Lester grow into a solid MLB starter has been fun. He seems that he has finally learned to trust his stuff and go right at the batters.

I'm not quite sure why the Yankees were so kind as to swing at so many first pitches. When was the last time you saw such an impatient Yankee offense?

Watching Girardi's jaw tighten with each question in the post game press conference made me giggle like a little school girl.
Chino
Great way to bust out of the losing streak. Kudos to Lester for a super game. Also nice to see 11 hits off our bats tonight.

This calms my soul after the TB series.
