Kevin Thomas - Bowden's stylish again as Dogs stroll to a win; Michael Bowden allows one run and strikes out eight in five innings against New Hampshire.

Michael Bowden headed to the dugout in the fifth inning Wednesday night as his Portland Sea Dogs teammates jogged past him.

Would this be the last time Bowden walked off the Hadlock Field mound, following the path of other pitching prospects in Portland like Jonathan Papelbon, Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson?

“I have no idea,” Bowden said. “I don’t think that way. We’ll see.”

Bowden finished his five innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks. He wasn’t real crisp but gave another hint of his dominance, striking out eight.

Bowden ran his record to 9-4 as he and the Sea Dogs cruised to an 11-1 victory against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Hadlock Field. The game began an hour late, at 8 p.m., because of rain.

Iggy Suarez knocked in three runs on three hits, and Jeff Corsaletti and Mickey Hall both added two RBI.

Richie Lentz, a new reliever, and closer Beau Vaughan combined for four innings of scoreless relief. Portland improved to 50-39, moving to four games behind first-place Trenton in the Eastern League Northern Division.

But the story was Bowden. He already has pitched 104 1⁄3 innings this season (2.33 ERA). Counting his Sea Dogs time in 2007, he has totaled 201 innings in Double-A and appears ready for a promotion to Triple-A, and someday the majors.

...

Bowden was relieved by Lentz, 23, who just arrived from advanced Class A Lancaster, Calif. Lentz, a 19th-round draft pick in 2006 out of the University of Washington, compiled a 2.87 ERA in Lancaster. He hit 95 mph on the Hadlock radar gun and struck out four in 21⁄3 innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

Vaughan got the last five outs, lowering his ERA to 2.56.

Lancaster first baseman Lars Anderson hit his 13th home run, went 3-for-5 and is batting .324 ... Jason Place (.255) also went 3-for-5, with his 12th homer ... reliever Cody McAllister (2.63) pitched two scoreless innings.

Greenville starter Felix Doubront (3.61) pitched 5 innings (5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K).

Dan Hickling - Bowden, Sea Dogs shut down Fisher Cats

PORTLAND, Maine – The lingering question asked most often in this corner of Red Sox Nation is not if pitcher Michael Bowden will be promoted from the Portland Sea Dogs, but when.

The answer to that may not or may not have been hastened last night by another of Bowden's strong outings, a five-inning stint that highlighted the Sea Dogs' 11-1 romp over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before 5,939 fans at Hadlock Field.

Held to a tight 83-pitch count (53 for strikes), Bowden ran through his entire repertoire of pitches with impressive results.

He struck out eight Fishers, walked only two, improved to an impressive 9-4 record, and now has eight wins in his last nine decisions.

...

Jeff Corsaletti and Mickey Hall each chipped in two RBIs to the Sea Dog cause.

Dan Goldberg - JetHawks win on flick of the wrist; Anderson helps seal road victory

LAKE ELSINORE - Lars Anderson stepped out of the batter's box and yelled something unprintable. With two on in the ninth and the JetHawks holding a two-run lead, the first baseman was mad at himself for fouling back a letter-high fastball, a pitch he felt he should have hit.

"When you have runners on base like that you want to drive them in," Anderson said after Wednesday's game.

He did, sending the next pitch - an outside changeup - over The Diamond's center field wall.

It turned out to be the game-winning hit in the JetHawks' 8-5 victory over Lake Elsinore, but the pitch actually fooled Anderson, who was geared for another fastball.

"I never look offspeed when I have two strikes," Anderson said. "I've been blown away by too many two-strike fastballs to look for an offspeed pitch."

...

The runs aided Josh Papelbon in earning his first victory of the season. The submariner took over for Blake Maxwell in the fifth with the JetHawks trailing 3-2. He pitched two innings of shutout ball followed by two perfect innings from Cody McAllister.

"Anderson's home run was huge," Epperson said, "but our bullpen won the game."

...

The JetHawks bullpen has been better than just about any team's in the California League. Their ERA is 3.86 and they have compiled a 20-13 record. The Storm finally scored on the bullpen (the first run the group had allowed in 14 innings) in the ninth. Recently acquired Felipe Garcia allowed two runs before being removed for Derrick Loop, who recorded the final out.

Dening homer fuels Spinners

BATAVIA, N.Y. -- White-hot Mitch Dening led off the game with a homer, and right-hander Brock Huntzinger pitched six strong innings for the win, as the Lowell Spinners climbed back to the .500 mark by launching a six-game road trip with a solid 5-1 victory over the host Batavia Muckdogs in New York-Penn League play last night before 975 fans at Dwyer Stadium.

...

Starting pitcher Huntzinger (2-0, 0.69 ERA) worked the first six innings, the longest outing by a Lowell pitcher this season, scattering five hits and fanning six.

Hard-throwing right-hander Stephen Fife relieved in the seventh and eighth, surrendering the lone Batavia run, and Seth Garrison mopped up with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Dening finished the night 2-for-4 as Lowell banged out 12 hits, with catcher Tim Federowicz adding two in his Spinners debut, while Ronald Bermudez and Cabreja also had a pair each.

Huntzinger, Dening, lead Spinners to win

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Brock Huntzinger pitched six scoreless innings and Mitch Dening extended his hitting streak to seven games with a solo home run as the Lowell Spinners rolled past the Batavia Muckdogs 5-1 on Wednesday night.

...

Lowell (11-11) opened the scoring with a leadoff home run by Dening, his second of the season. The Spinners tacked on a second run when Rafael Cabreja followed a Ryan Dent double with a triple. The two-run lead was more than enough for Huntzinger, who strung together his third scoreless performance of the season to lower his ERA to 0.67.
