Ken Lipshez - Swinging Cats find way past Sea Dogs; Brock Peterson's one-out double in the eighth inning lifts New Britain past Portland, 4-3.

Brock Peterson hit a one-out double to score Dustin Martin from second in the eighth inning Friday night as the Rock Cats edged the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3 before a sellout crowd of 6,579 at New Britain Stadium.

Martin started the inning against reliever Mike James (2-3) with a single to center. Matt Moses pushed the count to 3-0 before laying down a sacrifice bunt.

Peterson then slammed a 1-0 pitch over the head of left fielder Jeff Corsaletti to give New Britain (39-53) the lead run.

"They beat us tonight swinging the bat," Sea Dogs Manager Arnie Beyeler said. "These guys always swing the bats against us, I don't care what their numbers are."

Portland outfielder Zach Daeges and relief pitcher Beau Vaughan were added to the Northern Division roster for the Eastern League All-Star game.

Daeges replaces Nick Evans, who was recently promoted from the Binghamton Mets to the New York Mets, while Vaughan was added to the roster in place of his teammate, Michael Bowden, who will attend the game but be unavailable to pitch.

Portland infielder Ryan Khoury was placed on the disabled list. Infielder Kris Negron, who was selected by the Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2006 draft, was promoted from Class A Greenville to fill Khoury's spot on the roster. Negron, 22, was hitting .241 with 21 stolen bases in 81 games with Greenville.

Kevin Thomas - Maybe Ortiz makes it to Portland

Portland third baseman Jorge Jimenez (.190) has had a slow start since his promotion, but he went 3-for-4 Friday ... Outfielder Jeff Corsaellti has emerged as the team's top hitter (.304) and went 3-for-5 ... Kris Johnson got a no decision with 6 2/3 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 8 K.

Lancaster won 17-8 at Lake Elsinore (where the win was only 8 m.p.h.) ... Outfielder Josh Reddick (.352) went 3-for-6 ... Second baseman Chih-Hsien Chiang (.298) went 3-for-6 ... Shortstop Argenis Diaz has had his problems at the plate (.276) but he went 4-for-5 with 2 triples and a double ... In the last 10 games, Diaz is hitting .389, with most of those hits coming away from hitter-friendly home.

Terumasa Matuso, 25, is old to be pitching in lower Class A Greenville. But he is a rookie in the U.S., having pitched in the Japanese independent leagues ... Matsuo has a 5/46 ERA, but he dominated Friday (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K).

...

In the Gulf Coast League, 18-year-old outfielder Bryan Peterson (.367) went 2-for-5 and 17-year-old Michael Almanzar hit his first home run.

The Lowell Sun

Spins mucked in N.Y.

Spinners pitcher Stolmy Pimentel (2-1) took the loss on the mound, giving up all 5 runs over 4 innings on 4 hits, including a second-inning homer by Domnit Bolivar. The win was the second straight for Batavia, as it took the series 2-1 over Lowell, which falls to 11-13.

The Spinners tied the game in the top of the third after a bunt single by catcher Rafael Gil, a single by Will Middlebrooks and then an error loaded the bases. Shortstop Ryan Dent then brought in Gil on a sacrifice fly.

...

The Spinners cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth when leftfielder Luis Sumoza doubled and scored on single from second baseman Jonathan Hee. But there were zeroes on the rest of the scorebaord as Lowell managed only 5 hits on the night, including doubles by Sumoza and Hee.

JetHawks Pour it On Against Storm, Finish Sweep with 17-8 Win

The game was practically sealed in the second inning when Lancaster sent twelve batters to the plate. All the scoring came with two outs. Argenis Diaz had a RBI single and Matt Sheely a two-run triple to get the ball rolling. Daniel Nava and Lars Anderson added RBI singles and Josh Reddick drove in two with a bases-loaded single as the JetHawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

All nine JetHawks had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Remarkably, eight of the players drove in at least one run. Reid Engel had a huge night with a home run, a triple, and a double. His chance for a cycle ended in the ninth when he grounded out. Argenis Diaz also had a chance for a cycle with a single, double, and triple going into the eighth. Diaz settled for a second triple on the night's most bizarre play. His line drive to the right field wall sent right fielder Kellen Kulbacki crashing against the fence. Instead of hitting the wall, Kulbacki fell backwards through a door in the wall, toppling over and allowing Diaz to get to third.
