Full Version: All Star Parade in NYC
Royal Rooters > WE'RE TALKIN' BASEBALL > AROUND THE MAJORS
LargerMass
The parade is going right by my office so I stepped outside to see what was what. Highlights:

Dave Winnfield
Whitey Ford
Yogi Berra
Bob Gibson
Bob Feller
George Brett
Dennis Eckersly
Tommy Lasorda
David Ortiz
Dustin Pedroia
Tery Francona
Youks
Papelbon
Varitek
Drew

Pabelbon was the best, though. As his pickup went by with him perched in the bed, the crowd started chanting "Asshole. Asshole. Asshole."

Paplebon just sat back, extended his arm out, and with all four fingers pointing to the sky he simply displayed his Boston Red Sox World Series Championship Ring for all onlookers to see. Classic.

Thanks for the laugh. Paps is a piece of work. Small sample size, but Ortiz getting roundly boo'd last night, and this make it hard to like NY Yankee fans. Manny visiting his grandma again?

If anyone finds a picture of Paps waving his ring please post it.

I took a brief "time out" to check it out too at Bryant Park. I kept saying to myself "I'll head back to the office after Manny goes by..."

In terms of fan booing, I think the top three went something like this:
Papelbon
Youkilis
Pedroia

What was interesting to me from the Yankee fans was their treatment of Jeter and A-rod. Jeter was all-love with Derek-Jeter chants. A-rod was received warmly and loudly, but no name chanting, at least where I was.

Wade Boggs' hair was fairly convincing.

I waited and waited. No Manny...

Very regrettabley, I did not have my camera. There were a ton of press corp photographers mingling about the pickup trucks on the parade route, though. Some of the trucks had video cameramen abord as well. There must be a picture someplace.

Same here. I bolted when the National League teams started up, missed David Wright by a couple minutes.

Yeah - Jeter was with his mom, dad, and sister. Arod - ALONE. Actually, Arod got some boos on my block, and overall a pretty tepid fan reaction. I personally was hoping he would have the presence of mind to bring along a life size card bord cut out Madona.

Wade definitely joined "The Club".

Do you think Yankees would get cheered in Boston? I remember the Yanks getting soundly booed before the 99 All Star game -- it's the nature of the rivalry.

As I recall, Mariano Rivera was pretty well received opening day 2005. thumbsup.gif

As well as:

and Mr. Reggie Vision himself

When Joe Morgan went by, I wanted to scream "You're such an Idiot!", but decorum prevailed...

There's always a mixture of boos and cheers for the big name rival guys, but I thought the booing last night for Ortiz was way over the top. The ASG should be a kind of truce event, and enjoy the stars no matter where they're from. Actually, Ted Williams got as many boos in Boston as Joe DiMaggio, but Ted was a controversial guy. Anybody remember Jeter's reception at the 1999 ASG in Boston? There was that bit he put on mimicking Nomar with the batting gloves and the "toedance" Nomar does at the plate between pitches. As I recall, that was well received. But no, I think the frustration is showing big time with some Yankee fans. Last thing, I know that a relatively few fans booing as loud as they can will sound like a lot of booing. So, there is the bad apple effect.

Totally a bad apple story, but worth it. I happened to be at the Celebrity Softball event at Yankee Stadium. We had moved down to the loge boxes. So Maria Menuous wore a Sox cap. Some idiot decides he wants to start up the Boston Sucks chant whenever she's on the screen, makes a play, etc.

Lone obliterated typical CFB Frat boy type. Apparently the Usher took exception since it was only a celebrity game and yelled him to shut up. Guy does for a bit. Then forgets again and starts it up again. Rinse lather repeat. Third times a charm, and the guy is getting thrown out. The best part is the look on his face as he realizes how asisine he looks getting thrown out with no other frat boy types there to cheer on his antics.

PhilA67, I can't believe I didn't include Hammerin' Hank on my list...

I remember Jeter getting heavily booed during the pre-game introductions during the 99 All Star game. Both he and the guy next to him (can't remember who it was) got a big kick out of it.

I agree that the All Star game should be treated as a neutral event and no one should get booed but nowadays there are way too many idiots involved on both sides of the rivalry who can't put it aside even for an exhibition game.

Sounds like Yanks fans were all class.

Papelbon's pregnant wife reportedly felt threatened
ESPN.com news services

Updated: July 15, 2008, 9:41 PM ET

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon blamed the New York media for creating a firestorm that resulted in his pregnant wife being threatened on Tuesday.

Drew is the new Ortiz, ppl.
CTLovesTheSox
So which will the NY media blame on Papelbon? Navarro's error, or Quentin's throw?
samba guy
The first strike on Drew was at the ankles, come on!
samba guy
Mariano is putting a show there.

I'm not sure where else to put this rant, but, since there's no real "All-Star Game Thread", I guess this is as good a place as any.

I'm 40 years old, and have seen several stadiums come and go. I do value the history of the game, and realize that there have been many historic events that have taken place at Yankee Stadium. These were not limited to the world of baseball.
Here's where my problem starts. They're moving ACROSS THE STREET. It's not like Camden yards, where they re-vitalized the entire waterfront district. They are literally building a new stadium across the street from the existing one. Second, if I hear one more announcer say that ths is the last All Star Game at Yankee Stadium, I'm going to throw up. Unless they plan on changing the facade on the new stadium, it's going to be called Yankee Stadium as well, as it's already etched in gold on the new building. Third, the whole reason for this new stadium is to add more luxury boxes. If you check the seating charts, the new stadium will actually hold fewer fans, but will have 4x as many luxury suites. I'll hold off on the tax issues and ticket pricing, but suffice it to say, that this whole "feel good" story of the "last All Star Game at Yankee Stadium" is nothing but a whole load of crap.

Watching JD collect the MVP award to the boos of the handful of Yankees fans left made staying up worthwhile.
