Updated: July 15, 2008, 9:41 PM ET
Red Sox closer
Jonathan Papelbon blamed the New York media for creating a firestorm that resulted in his pregnant wife being threatened on Tuesday.
MLB.com reported that during a red carpet parade for the All-Star Game that went down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Papelbon and his wife Ashley were bombarded by insults from fans.
"I feel like I needed to be in a bullet-proof car," Papelbon said, according to the Web site. "My wife is pregnant and she's getting her life threatened. It's stupid."

Well it's not like they have any reason to root for the American League. The mfy sure aren't in any danger of making the World Series.

Yep, the Yankee fans have once again demonstrated that they are as classless as any fans in sports.
It makes me laugh because it's just the latest indication that these knuckle draggers simply cannot deal with the fact that the Red Sox have won two World Series Championships in 4 years while they struggle to keep pace with the Toronto Blue Jays.
**** them. They deserve A Rod. And that drooling vegetable of an owner.

Just think--the Yankees crowd tonight is mostly corporate big money people--imagine what it would sound like if the "real" Yankee fans were in the House.
We were at Yankee Stadium for a game of that last Sox series---the Lester W. I can unequovically say, once again, that Yankees fans are really the scum of sports. Maybe in some places its appropriate for 8 year olds to be dropping f bombs, but not where I come from.

Its really unbelieveable. Somehow in between trips to Yankee Stadium--which for me are every 3 years or so--I convince myself that maybe Yankees fans really aren't that bad and that they're really a lot like Red Sox fans.
Then I go there. Forget it. They're WORSE than you think they are...I saw and heard more stuff in 3 innings than I have in a dozen games at Fenway. Just a total different class of people. Like--the ones in New York have no class. There are stupid idiots in Boston, no doubt, but its the exception, not the rule. The ratio of stupids to good fans in Boston is at least 10:1. In New York, its probably not even 2:1.

EDIT - not ED, or FINY, or many others who are not stupid assholes ... but, you get the point. The tri-state area is just chalk full of dooshes

Based on their reaction to papelbon, i almost hope that the AL takes the lead, and Rivera sends NY fans home with a nice big fat blown save to remember the final season at the toilet

This is what happens when you don't have real All Stars playing in the All Star game in late innings.
This whole game disgusts me. At some point, they need to decide whether the object of the game is to win it, or to get everybody playing time and an at bat. Those two are mutually exclusive.

Agreed 100%. If I were an All Star manager I'd have 3 LOOGYs on my roster, have 2 starters each go 3 innings and then start using my best relievers, let the fan starters get 1 PA and then immediately pull them for the best players, and liberally pinch hit for middle infielders.
Why the hell not? Bud, you want it to count, that's the kind of game you'd get from me.

What a--holes Yankee fans are. They were disgusting and marred an otherwise classic game.
1) What happened to Ashley Papelbon was reprehensible, and it was thanks to a stupid NY Post article based on non-fact and misquoting. I don't blame Pap flaming out like he did. He made it clear that he supported Rivera closing the game. The article was unprofessional and the fan reaction was execrable.
2) Was that the best the Yankees could do for the first pitch -- parade out Steinf--ker? In 1999 we brought a living baseball museum and the Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived. They haul out a bombastic jerk just so he can hand four balls to four HOFers. I would prefer they haul out either Berra or Ford or both, arguably the greatest living ex-Yankees. Have Ford toss one to Berra and leave SiaS out of the ceremony. I admit that I would have enjoyed seeing Ford toss a spitter to Mister "They give you cash which is just as good as money!".
3) Every Sox player booed every time. Not surprising, but since there is the WS HFA riding on the game, the lukewarm reaction to Drew's HR is rather puzzling. Their hatred for us supercedes winning the game, and it showed later on.
4) The crowd was merciless towards Pap during the 8th inning. The run which scored was unearned thanks to a crappy throw by Navarro. Yet Pap was booed like crazy after the steal/error, after the run scored, and at the end of the inning. It made me hope that Rivera crapped his pants during his time in there. At least he gave up a hit to Tejada also.
5) There were maybe 2,000 people left to see Drew get the game MVP, but it sounded like 20,000 booing fans out there. And no, they weren't saying "Droooooo!". Jeanne Zelasko said something like "Oooh, this is weird, the MVP is wearing a Red Sox uniform here at Yankee Stadium, how perfect!" Nice dig.
If you have a recording of the 1999 game, go back and see if our fans behaved that poorly towards the Yankees. Whereas I doubt the Yanks were received warmly, I defy you to find behaviour as bad as tonight. It turned the game into a referendum on how bad this rivalry is, and how sore the Yankees are that the tide has turned in the last few years.
And when Pap returns to Gotham, I hope he hits a batter or two and blows all the others away. He should nail A-Fraud in the rear end and say "That one's for Ashley!"

I especially liked how Boggs wore an MFY hat during the pre-game ceremony, despite the graphic that he was inducted as a Red Sox. At least Winfield had both Padres and Yankees caps going. Where was Wade when the Yankee HOFers were throwing out the first pitch?

And they need to actually fix this damn game ... I agree with TreeRol, or whoever said it, they need to decide if this is really a game that matters and play it that way - or just admit its a pointless showcase and let everyone play like in a little league game ...
