Ken Lipshez - Turning his chances into victory; Reserve catcher John Otness gets the big hits as the Sea Dogs win the series finale at New Britain.

Otness smacked a double and a home run and drove in four runs Monday to lead the Sea Dogs to a 9-5 victory at New Britain Stadium.

Starting catcher Mark Wagner gets most of the attention as Jason Varitek's eventual replacement in Boston, but Otness is making his opportunities count.

"Those guys split time at the first part of the season," Sea Dogs Manager Arnie Beyeler said. "For whatever reason, (Otness is) in the role he's in and he shows up every day. He's swinging the bat very well this year, doing a great job, and he's a pleasure to have around."

Otness delivered a big blow in Portland's five-run first inning, ripping a two-run double to left off right-hander Jeff Manship.

...

Neither Portland starter Dave Gassner nor Manship made it past the fourth inning. Control problems were costly to Manship (1-4), who walked Iggy Suarez and Jeff Corsaletti with one out in the first before successive hits by Aaron Bates, Zach Daeges and Otness and Sandy Madera's two-out infield hit made it 5-0.

"We're into deep counts and see a lot of pitches every night," Beyeler said. "These guys make pitchers work and there's something to be said for that. We put some good at-bats together and drove some balls."

Leadoff batter Mickey Hall hit a solo homer for the Sea Dogs. Brian Dinkelman homered for the Rock Cats with the bases empty in the third.

Mike James (3-3) allowed a run on three hits in relief of Gassner, who was working on three days' rest.

Dan Goldberg - 'Hawks figure it out to avoid sweep

Blake Maxwell and a cadre of relievers did just that on Monday, helping the JetHawks avoid the sweep with a 9-4 win at The Hangar.

Maxwell allowed a double and a run in each of the first two frames, but just one more hit in his final two innings.

Since replacing Adam Mills in the starting rotation, the former 40th-round pick has yet to earn a win, and has gone more than four innings just once in his four starts. He threw 74 pitches Monday night, and Epperson wanted to be cautious and not risk a long and possibly debilitating fifth inning.

...

In the fourth with the score tied 2-2, Josh Reddick led off with a pop-up to center. Trayvon Robinson never saw the ball, throwing his hands out to his sides as a plea for help. Second baseman Justin Fuller pointed at it, but Robinson could do nothing except watch it plop in front of him as Reddick raced to second.

Luis Exposito hit the next pitch against the left-center field wall, giving the JetHawks a 3-2 lead.

...

Bryce Cox gave up just one hit in the fifth. Jason Blackey, who has become one of Epperson's most reliable options out of the bullpen, followed with three near-perfect innings. He did not allow a hit or even a ball out of the infield while striking out six. His curveball overmatched 66ers hitters as it has all season.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Felix Doubront pitched five solid innings as the Greenville Drive made the most of their three hits in a 3-1 victory over Lakewood on Monday night.

...

The Drive scored in the first on a wild pitch, as Futures Game MVP Che-Hsuan Lin crossed the plate after reaching via a throwing error. The Drive struck again in the fourth on another wild pitch, this time Jered Stanley scoring after drawing a lead-off walk.

Mike Finney - Gibson ready to take a shot with Red Sox; Seaford grad set to launch pro career in Fort Myers

I just flew down [to Fort Myers on Monday] and I'm just starting to take it all in and am getting a chance to meet all of the players and coaches and am just getting accustomed to everything," Gibson said.

"None of it seems real to me right now. I think that I'll finally come down from cloud nine when I start playing. Right now, it's like when you talk to somebody on the phone that you can't put a face to. It seems kind of distant."

Gibson is not officially a member of the Red Sox, as he is still awaiting the results of a blood test. But he expects to be playing rookie ball in Florida's Gulf Coast League by the end of the week, hopefully.
