So, do the heretofore lousy Mariners get their virtual B12 shots and play better with the Red Sox in town? It's happened before. If ever a team needed to buck up, or straighten up and fly right, it would be nice for the Sox to do it right now.

BigSlick
I love Washburn. I have no stats to back this up but he always seem to suck against the Sox.
BigSlick
Is anyone awake?

I mean other than Tek who just CRUSHED one.

2-0 Sox. Lester is dealing.
samba guy
Tek homers!

And I just watched that play from Pedroia to save a run. I couldn't be happier.

By the way, how did Ichiro hit that ball an inch from the dirt?
thanman2
Mariners are very impatient tonight. Lester is at 50 pitches after 5 innings, 40/10 K/B ratio. Nice! Just pump the cutter in and let the defense clean up.
SoxAroundTheWorld
I'm awake. Just heard the FSN announcers site someone's (Lowell?) SAT scores. Then I'm told that Ted is 2 for 3 with a dinger. Must still be sleeping.
Wakefield 49
Seriously now, what would it take to make Varitek abandon hitting left handed?
gerky
Did the game just suddenly cut to commercial following the second out for anyone else?

Uh, no. But I'm on MLB.TV, and they are commercial-adverse anyway.

I like these Lester innings. More please. Am less crazy about the squandering I've seen from the visitors' bats.
BigSlick
So it wasn't an injury visit to the mound, Lester just needed people to stand around him and hide the fact that he needed to adjust his cup.

Thanks Remdawg for pointing that out.

Reminds me of a story I heard Mark Grace tell about Greg Maddux. Grace was paying 1st base and Maddux threw a pitch and bent over and put his hands on his knees. Grace ran from first to the mound and asked what was wrong.

Maddux said "nothing, just stand there a minute."

Grace said "No what's wrong? Don't pitch if you're hurt."

Maddux said "I'm not hurt, I just got a hard-on and I need a minute for it to go away."

Grace replied "Wow, you really like pitching don't you?"
SoxAroundTheWorld
Thanks for the chuckle, Slick. I needed it as Lester had to work out of the jam. We need more runs!!!

Nice insurance by Jed.
SoxAroundTheWorld
Huge result for Lowrie. Just what the doctor ordered.

Clutch hit by J-Lo.
SFFM38
Any chance this Jimenez pitcher related to the other Jimenez on Colorado Rockies team?

You're welcome, and we got some more runs too!!!

Tito, just remember SHORT LEASH on Lester.. 87 pitches thru 7 IP.

Hmm, not a great start to this inning...

Pssst, Tito. Didn't you hear SFFM38? That's back to back hits to lead off the inning!!!!!

Ichiro is an important batter in this inning.

I don't get why Francona's gone Grady on us the last 3 games, trying to squeeze every ounce out of Beckett, Wakefiel, and Lester, when Okajima hasn't pitched in over a week and Papelbon hasn't worked since the All-Star Game.

Because Oki and the rest of the bullpen sucks and we havnt been a head in the 9th or even the eighth for paps to come in.
acr
That's another reason why you don't leave one of your most important starters out to dry...shit like that, getting hit by comebackers.

You don't need to be ****ing "a head" in the 9th to use your best relieverI'm not saying put him in in the 7th or shit like that, but high leverage situations, such as right now, he should pitch, save situation or no.

Um, Sox were ahead in the 8th inning at least once in Anaheim...

Paps just shows why he should have gotten those other high lev innings. Huge DP!

Lowell is not having a great night.

And the Sox win a game on the road. Go figure.

Water! Good Night all.

Water, just in time to go to work. Have a good day, all!

just making sure, Orsillo was wrong when he said that it wasn't a save situation, right? 2 men on, up 4-0 -- that's a save opportunity, it didn't just become one when the Ms loaded the bases.

Any help?
Renton
Correct. Papelbon got the save.

Howd Lowe look? He was really good when he first came up a few years ago.

I'd say Lowe looked quite good when he threw strikes. His problem was finding the zone. Sounds familiar, eh?

Much needed win - just saw the highlights.

just to be clear, though, Orsillo was claiming that, had Papelbon been brought in a batter earlier, with men on first and second instead of bases loaded, it wouldn't have been a save

You are correct and Orsillo was wrong. If the tying run is on base, at bat or on deck when a reliever comes in it is a save situation.

Edit: or if it's a 3 run game.

Correct. Didn't someone on the Sox in the last few years (Tavarez maybe?) get a save after coming in with something like a 16-1 lead?

I DO remember that now that you mention it... I think it was Tavarez.
