Mike Szostak - PawSox 5, Red Wings 3 -- Rally in seventh wins it

Jeff Corsaletti started the rally with a one-out double to right that sent Mulvey to the dugout. Gil Velazquez followed with an RBI single to center off Barrett and took second on the throw home. Jonathan Van Every ripped a ground ball inside the first-base bag that rolled to the right-field corner for an RBI triple. Exit Barrett and enter Lahey. Jeff Bailey greeted him with an RBI single to left.

Zink didn’t have his best stuff early in the game, but he had enough to last seven innings and win his 13th game, the most in the International League. He allowed nine hits in seven innings but only three after a five-hit, three-run third. He walked one batter, struck out two and threw 70 strikes among his 95 pitches. John Switzer retired the side in the eighth and Chris Smith did the same in the ninth.

Mike Szostak - Red-hot PawSox glad to be home

"And, of course, we have Carter and Bailey and Van Every and the numbers they have put up, and Kottaras. They're all around the 20-home-run mark and 50-70 RBI. That's pretty good, so they've all played well," Johnson said of his big hitters.

Outfielder Chris Carter, the designated hitter last night, was hitting .298 with 22 home runs, 23 doubles, 74 RBI and 406 at-bats. He is sixth in the league in batting average, second in RBI, fourth in extra-base hits (47) and fifth in home runs. He had two its in his major-league debut June 5 and returned to Pawtucket the next day.

First baseman-outfielder Jeff Bailey was hitting .293 with 24 home runs, 19 doubles, 64 RBI and 76 runs. He is tied with Van Every for third in homers and is third in slugging percentage (.559) and second in runs. He has had two brief stints with Boston this season.

Jonathan Van Every, the center fielder, had a .277 average with 24 homers, 13 doubles, 60 RBI and 74 runs. He is third in the league in runs. He made his major-league debut in Baltimore on May 18.

Catcher George Kottaras is hitting only .235 but has 19 home runs and 55 RBI. Johnson also mentioned catcher Dusty Brown, who is hitting .275 with 10 homers and 38 RBI.

Brendan McGair - Velazquez helps PawSox post comeback win

PAWTUCKET – The goal of minor league baseball is to provide opportunities.

It doesn’t matter how these “chances” are created or how they arise. The bottom line is to say “thank you” and whatever you do, don’t look back.

That’s exactly what Gil Velazquez has done lately. More time at shortstop was created the moment Jed Lowrie was promoted to Boston on July 12.

Becoming an everyday contributor has suited Velazquez just fine. He was the main catalyst offensively Tuesday night with a home run and a game-tying single as Pawtucket rallied to top Rochester, 5-3, before 11,157. Perfection sums up Velazquez’s night. He went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. He sent his sixth home run into the Pawtucket bullpen, a shot that snapped Rochester’s Kevin Mulvey’s shutout bid in the fifth.

“He’s swinging the bat well right now,” said PawSox manager Ron Johnson, no doubt referencing the .337 clip Velazquez has enjoyed the last 21 games. “He was right in the mix all night long.”

...

Even though he was walking tall as a big leaguer, Moss kept close tabs on what was transpiring down on the farm. The PawSox trailed by a game when he left in June. Last night marked the 37th consecutive game they have spent in first.
“I knew exactly what was going on because I knew I’d be back down at some point,” said Moss, who has enjoyed three call-ups this year. “There wasn’t going to be a roster spot with David coming back.

“I just tried to keep my routine going, but you don’t try to do too much. When you get in a game the adrenaline takes over,” Moss continued. “You try to work on your mechanics and be ready with what comes.”

...

Starting at second for Pawtucket was Jeff Natale, who came off the disabled list after missing close to 2 ½ months with a fractured left forearm. Natale has rehabbed with the Gulf Coast Red Sox and with Single-A Lowell, where he batted .333 in 11 games. As luck would have it, Natale was plunked twice on the left hand. … To make room for Natale, Chad Spann was released, the news coming down while the PawSox were on their home from Norfolk Monday evening. …

Kevin Gray - Fishers feel denied a win

MANCHESTER – Portland's Jorge Jimenez and Josh Reddick each homered in the 10th inning, handing the Fisher Cats an unsettling 11-7 loss at Merchantsauto.com Stadium last night.

The box score doesn't show how New Hampshire nearly won in the ninth -- in walk-off fashion -- only to be denied by an umpire's controversial decision.

...

In the ninth, Travis Snider singled off Beau Vaughn for the potential game-winner, and Scott Campbell was thrown out at the plate by center fielder Josh Reddick. Replays showed Campbell beat the high throw, buthome umpire Joel Hospodka saw it differently, touching off a vehement argument from the Fisher Cats. New Hampshire starter Brandon Magee was ejected from the dugout.

Vaughan (2-1) entered in the ninth and picked up the win, while New Hampshire's Jared Gothreaux (0-1) went from potential winner to tough-luck loser in matter of minutes.

Jimenez belted a two-run homer off Gothreaux, and Reddick followed with a similar two-run, train-track shot against Jo Matumoto.

Kevin Gray's On Baseball: Former Fisher Cat takes mound in bigs

Unbeknownst to Sea Dogs center fielder Josh Reddick, he was part of a potential Red Sox trade for C.C. Sabathia, who recently landed with Milwaukee.

"My agent told me a week ago that if we (the Red Sox) had gotten Sabathia, I would've gone to the Brewers organization," Reddick said. "It's one of those things as a player, especially with all the talk about Manny (Ramirez) right now, you sit there and wonder if you're going to be thrown in there."
