The Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have offered Joe Borowski a minor league contract.
Borowski is a long-shot to contribute to the Sox this season, but he his salary is a drop in the bucket. Still, his velocity was way down before getting released by the Indians, and he'd have to recapture it if he's even going to be a decent insurance policy.
This was just posted on rotoworld, are we really this desperate.

Granted, Joe B has shown a steady decline over the last few years, but why not give him a chance to prove he's still worth something in the minors?
If he came in and pitched at his 2007 level, he'd just be a replacement for Hansen above only Timlin on the depth chart(and even he's been pitching well in the last few weeks). His 2008 numbers are so far below last year, that it's not even worth the risk.
Chris Smith has more of an upside, as would half the guys who make it through the waiver wire

Depth is never a bad thing.
Even if we did sign him, I wouldn't expect him to get out of Pawtucket, unless things really got ugly in the bullpen.
Might as well give the guy one last shot in professional baseball.

who cares if it's an MiLB deal? Even if there is only a 1% chance he catches fire, chances are, he's not going to affect the team one way or another. 1% is better than 0.

Borowski last year had 58 Ks and just 17 walks. He gave up a lot of hits, but that Indians' defense was pretty abysmal. I think his ERA last year was a bit of bad luck.
This year, he was hurt from Spring Training and was run out there time and time again.
Can't hurt to sign him, give him a chance.

I dont think his 85 mph 'fastball' is bad luck though. He sucks. Pass.

Worth a shot.
Looking at his game logs for 08, his ERA is pretty deceptive.
Games where he gave up runs
6G 4.2IP 14R
Games where he gave up no runs
12G 12IP 0R
Start him off with garbage time appearances and work from there.

I seem to recall a closer with the Sox whose FB was in that neighborhood.
Anybody clock Maddux this year?
58 SO vs. 17 walks is pitching.
Twice as many shuout innings as run-scoring? Can Hansen EVER do that?
Unless he recovers a little zip / health / arm strength , I have to agree with Duffy's Cliff; start him with garbage time, maybe we'll get a 2008 Bartolo Colon.
Wait . . . .

All I see here is a Mike "Mr. Infinity" Remlinger part Deux. We definitely don't need that in a pennant race.

If he'll accept a minor league contract then I don't see what the risk is. Let him pitch in AAA and if he does well give him a shot at garbage innings.
