Robert Lee - Yankees 5, PawSox 2 -- Ian Kennedy slows PawSox offense

The PawSox added right-handed pitchers David Aardsma and Bartolo Colon to their roster yesterday. Aardsma is on a 30-day injury rehab assignment from Boston, and Colon is expected to begin his rehab assignment tomorrow at Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Aardsma, who pitched one inning yesterday, striking out two batters and not allowing a hit, was injured during a relief appearance for Boston in Anaheim on July 18.

“He was real good, so that was good to see,” Johnson said, adding that Aardsma’s splitter was his best pitch. “He threw good stuff. The ball came out of his hand well. He said he had no problems with the groin, so that was real good.”

In 38 relief appearances this season for Boston, Aardsma is 3-2 with a 2.75 earned-run-average (39 innings, 29 hits, 14 runs, 12 earned runs, 26 walks, 41 strikeouts, 1 home run).

Aardsma is scheduled to pitch another inning tomorrow at Scranton Wilkes/Barre.

With the trade deadline now in the past, it seems the Red Sox have no choice but to fix their bullpen concerns internally. Hold on says David Aardsma after the right-hander tossed a clean sixth inning for the PawSox, striking out two.

“Obviously we all thought something was going to happen for the ‘pen. But honestly, in games when it’s really mattered, the bullpen has done real well,” said Aardmsa, whose been on the disabled list since July 19 with a right groin strain. “Each guy has been stepping up and doing their job. (Mike) Timlin has done great. (Hideki) Okajima has done awesome lately. (Manny) Delcarmen is throwing lights out. (Craig) Hansen was throwing good right before he left. (Jonathan Papelbon) is Paps.”

Aardsma threw 14 pitches (eight strikes). His fastball got up to the mid 90s and came away encouraged with how he felt throwing his splitter. He’s scheduled to work an inning Tuesday night in Scranton before hopefully joining Boston in Kansas City.

“Obviously it felt great not holding anything back. I felt I could actually let the ball go,” said Aardsma. “What I really liked was that I was able to throw the ball where I wanted to instead of just throwing it.”

Susan Slusser - One upbeat moment during dismal weekend

Big series for Lowrie: Former Stanford infielder Jed Lowrie, 24, went 6-for-10 in the three games against Oakland with seven RBIs and three runs.

"He's killed us," A's second baseman Mark Ellis said. "He looks like he's been here awhile."

Lowrie, who has started 12 of the past 14 games with Julio Lugo out with a quad strain, hit his first major-league triple, driving in two runs in the fourth.

"I feel like I've had some good at-bats and some success since I've been here," he said.
