Full Version: MLB looking into Manny's departure

Heard about this on WEEI this morning, somehow the story didn't appear on my radar yesterday (8/7) when it broke.

Feeling a little duped, Red Sox Nation? Still wondering if this whole thing was on the level?
You are not alone. The commissioner's office is investigating the circumstances of Manny's final hours with the Red Sox. The Globe has learned (from a source with direct knowledge of the inquiry) that Bud Selig directed Major League Baseball executive vice president Rob Manfred to contact all parties for an explanation of how things unfolded around last week's trading deadline. According to the source, Manfred has yet to report back to the commissioner.

Here's why Selig's office is looking into the matter:

The Red Sox had an option to retain Ramírez in 2009 for $20 million. They had the same option for 2010. Ramírez, who will turn 37 next season, wanted to be a free agent at the end of this season. His agent wanted the same thing. Boras inherited Ramírez's old contract and stood to earn nothing until Manny signed a new one. It was in the interest of the player and the agent to have the options dropped.

What possible outcome could this 'investigation' have that would prove positive to the Sox? Could they fine Manny and/or Borras? Seems much to do about nothing but maybe I'm missing something?

Is anyone other than the Shank reporting this? I question whether there is actually an investigation, nevermind what might come of it.

Kurkjian said he had it too this morning on Mike and Mike.

All of the outlets that are reporting it are attributing the story to the CHB's article in the Globe. No one else has any first hand information. So it is all very interesting...

I think this is more of CHB being CHB. The fact that he buried this 'exclusive' deep in the story demonstrates it.
If it could be proven Manny intentionally dogged it just to get his release, wouldn't that be grounds for, oh, I don't know, being banned from the game? I don't see any blowback on the Red Sox FO.
If you just look at this story on the surface, it doesn't make any sense.
It hinges on the assumption that someone is going to pay Manny $20 million next year or $40 million over the next two. (highly doubt it.) So while it makes sense for Boras to try to weasel out a new contract to get a cut, what would Manny's incentive be? The money is not going to be as good next years, what's in it for him? If anything he'd have wanted Boston to pick up his option because that's the most money he's going to see.
And lets be realistic, for team Boras to pressure the red sox front office into trading Manny is doomed to failure as when members of the umpires union several years ago tried to "pressure" MLB by all resigning.
If Selig is 'looking into" anything, its how the three teams pulled off a complicated 3-way trade so late into the game especially after the Florida deal died.

I'm not a lawyer or anything even close, but it seems like it would be hard for MLB to PROVE that Manny dogged it to try to get out of his contract. If it is really true that Manny said, after he was traded, that he would be willing to play hard for the Red Sox the rest of this seaon as long as the FO promised not to pick up his option, then that might be a good start towards proving something. The Red Sox don't stand to gain anything directly. I think this situation has the potential to bring out some pretty ugly stories and comments by all parties involved, so in that respect I think it might be better to just drop it. Maybe, just pretending to investigate this would knock Boras down a peg.

I'm so irritated by that little prick.

I thought he was talking about MoVaughn.org.

You might be right, though.

It seems Theo is not happy about the leak either, SI reports.

Epstein was said by associates to have been upset about the leaking of an alleged story claiming Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, called him back an hour after the trade to try to have the blockbuster deal rescinded and get Ramirez back to Boston without the option years. ... In any case, what upset Epstein was the unnecessary smearing of Ramirez's name.
