We've seen players in the past attribute poor seasons to bad family situations (Damon, for instance). I don't see Varitek doing that, but...
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds...es_for_divorce/Sox catcher
Jason Varitek (above) is splitting with his wife,
Karen. The team captain filed for divorce July 28 in Gwinnett County, Ga., where the couple live in the offseason. They were married in 1997 and have three daughters, ages 8, 6, and 3. Varitek is in the final year of a four-year, $40-million contract he signed after the BoSox won the World Series in 2004. He'll be a free agent at the end of this season, though he turns 37 in April and is hitting just .216. Neither Varitek's attorney,
Pamela Tremayne, nor his wife's attorney,
Jonathan Levine, returned our phone calls yesterday.

Bingo.
PM for a the story if you really want it.
EDIT: I'm not going to answer the PMs any more and frankly I'm sorry I ever brought it up. This is really none of our business. My previous comment in the other thread was out of line, although what I know is true, it's probably true for 80% of baseball. My intent was really to just point out that what we want to believe about certain players is probably rarely true, they are human, the make mistakes and have flaws just like us.
Let's let this die.

I've suspected that Karen Varitek had reason to be concerned for the stability of their marriage since this article broke in the Globe back in 05':
QUOTE
Varitek, who lives in nearby Suwanee with his wife, Karen, and preschool-age daughters Alexandra Rose and Kendall Anne, splits his afternoons between this facility, owned in part by former big leaguer Terry Pendleton, and BodyFlex, the gym where he is put through his paces by his personal trainer, Leslie Eddins, who gets a workout of his own just pushing back Varitek's massive thighs as far as they will go with the catcher lying on his back.

Personally, I wouldn't assume anything just because he has a female personal trainer. He's probably not the only professional baseball player who has a female personal trainer.
Besides, it's not like any professional baseball player only has a personal trainer as a potential source for such fun, it's not hard to guess what the road trips can be like for a large proportion of the MLB population. Besides, as any details of such episodes would have absolutely nothing to do with on field performance, there's really nothing to be gained from publicly airing them, as it could only cause an inevitable 3-way flame war between those "in the know", the fanboys, and the cynics.

Just to be clear, my post was tongue in cheek.
The only reason I was able to recall that article from 3 years ago (sometimes I scare even myself) was because my girlfriend made a big deal of that particular line (she's a big fan of his thighs).

There's no way to ever quantify things like this, but it sure is weird that his season went in the shitter not too long after Ms. Watney joined the club. She came aboard on 5/6, so it stands to reason something probably would have started after a few weeks, and his slide into hitting hell began on June 1 basically.
I mean he had two months north of an 850 OPS to start the year, then just suddenly nosedived off the cliff. He was flat out raking the first two months.
It's possible that between his personal distractions and the immense amount of time he puts into game preparation for the pitching staff, that his hitting was what suffered.

Bad Year for Tek
Not only is Jason Varitek not hitting in the final year of his contract, he's also getting divorced:
Jason Varitek had nothing to say today, at least to us, about his divorce. And there are few details in the documents filed in Gwinnett County, Ga. Seems the Sox catcher and his wife, Karen, split June 7 and are living separately. In his complaint, filed at the end of July, the team captain contends the marriage is "irretrievably broken" and there are "no prospects for a reconciliation."
I have a friend who Varitek tried to pick up a few years ago, despite the fact she was on a date with her future husband. Sometime after that encounter she saw Varitek's wife on TV and realized they looked alike. Seems Tek used the Roger Clemens MO of dating women who looked like his wife so people who just glanced at the couple would think that indeed was his spouse.
http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/028422.phpYikes.

'Tek was already the most overrated player in recent Red Sox history (in my judgement). Apparently, he's also the most overrated "family man."
In fairness to him, he didn't ask to be labled as such, and its not like he can just say "look, you idiots, I cheat on my wife all the time, my wedding vows mean nothing to me," but...

Ok.
Well, I could pretend that I don't care, but I'd be lying.
Look, one of the attractions to the Red Sox for me and my wife is that they really do go beyond just sports on the field--they're a form of entertainment for us. The Sox are like a real, life soap opera. They have interesting characters, good guys and bad. Its fun to follow them both on the field and off the field, and I've stayed in the same hotel as they have and had a chance to see some of the guys at Starbucks on the road hanging out with each other and their families and its cool--just like with movie stars or whatever.
Its just fun. Now, obviously this particular story isn't so much fun, but if a NESN girl really did break up his marriage--well then yeah, I'd be intersting in knowing about it.

I read McCain's autobiography and it sounds like his marriage was dead when he came back from the POW camp. People change after eight years not seeing each other. If me and the wife didn't see each other for eight years, she'd probably have run off with a rich old geezer and I'd be playing golf every day and drinking Guinness.

I'll bet Tek's wife asked Scott Boras what to do about a possible cheating situation and he suggested she opt-out of the final years of their marriage and then told Tek that things seemed "irretrievably broken" and he should get out now so his hitting doesnt suffer anymore and he can cash in on the free agency market. Then she receives half of Tek's money and Boras will get a portion of that for helping her out and a huge portion of Tek's new contract. He is an evil evil man.
