Marty Dobrow - Minor League Notebook: Obliques have been a pain; Organization hurt by muscle strains

First came Pawtucket center fielder Jonathan Van Every, who suffered a mild strain Aug. 6. Van Every, batting .266 with 24 home runs and 63 RBIs, could return to the lineup during the series at Syracuse, which opened last night.

On Aug. 7, PawSox left fielder Chris Carter had to leave a game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a strained oblique that sent him to the DL. Carter is hitting .293 with 24 homers and a team-leading 78 RBIs.

Three days later, the Lancaster JetHawks lost Daniel Nava to an oblique strain. Nava, in his first year in affiliated minor league ball, has been a great find for Boston. Undrafted out of Santa Clara University, he played for Chico, Calif., in the Golden Baseball League last year and was named Baseball America's No. 1 independent prospect. The Sox signed the switch-hitter last October, and he has thrived for the Single A JetHawks, batting .337 with 10 home runs. Nava was placed on the DL yesterday, according to JetHawks director of broadcasting and media relations Jeff Lasky.

Mike Hazen, Boston's director of player development, says the rash of oblique injuries is not confined to the Red Sox.

...

With six shutout innings and a victory over first-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Wednesday night, Pawtucket righthander Edgar Martinez continued his odd journey up the Red Sox ladder.

...

Though the 26-year-old Martinez returned to the bullpen for another month, he has since made a name for himself in a starting role. Since June 6, he has made 12 starts and one relief appearance. His overall record of 7-2 with a 3.79 ERA includes a 6-1 mark and a 3.03 ERA as a starter.

...

With two hits, including a grand slam, to spark the Portland Sea Dogs to an 11-3 victory over Altoona yesterday, Lars Anderson continued his torrid hitting. A 20th-round pick in 2006, the first baseman is now hitting .333 with 5 homers and 23 RBIs in 25 games at Double A, after hitting .317 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs in 77 games for Lancaster.

Rich Thompson - Bartolo Colon takes his time on road back

The PawSox have three pitchers that can close but choose not to designate one for the job.

Right-hander Chris Smith (1-3, 2.80 ERA) has been the most prominent player for Johnson at the end of games, evidenced by his team-high 15 saves. Hunter Jones (7-2, 3.30) is Johnson’s southpaw option with five saves, while Double-A call-up Beau Vaughn also has excellent closer credentials.

In 39 relief appearances (46 innings) for the Portland Sea Dogs, Vaughn went 2-1 with 16 saves and a 2.12 ERA.

...

Portland starter Adam Mills caught a tough break his last time out, earning a no-decision in the Sea Dogs’ 4-3 home win vs. Altoona on Tuesday night.

Mills pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts. . . .

David Mailman delivered four hits and two RBI in Single-A Greenville’s 3-1 win over Lexington on Tuesday, a game in which Ryne Miller picked up his third save.

Lindsay Kramer - Chiefs 7, PawSox 6 -- Syracuse rallies against Chris Smith

Pawtucket’s power surge was something of a surprise. PawSox outfielder Jeff Bailey was recalled to Boston yesterday, to fill in for the injured Mike Lowell. Bailey has 25 homers this year. Pawtucket was already hurting in the big lumber department, with outfielders Chris Carter (24 homers) and Jonathan Van Every (24 homers) both out with oblique injuries.

...

Despite the dearth of big bats, first baseman Sandy Madera and shortstop Josh Wilson joined Ginter in homering.

“I continually am impressed with the effort and fight in this ball club,” Johnson said. “We’ve had other guys step up. That’s what you are looking for in these guys.”

Kevin Thomas - Anderson's grand slam sets pace as Sea Dogs rout Curve; Portland’s first baseman continues his tear, and the Dogs remain in control of their playoff fate.

Anderson’s grand slam paced an 11-3 rout of the Altoona Curve on Thursday afternoon before a sun-loving crowd at Hadlock Field.

Mickey Hall and Ryan Khoury also hit home runs, and Dave Gassner (6-5) threw three-hit, shutout ball for six innings, keeping Portland in control of a playoff spot.

...

Anderson, who turns 21 next month, was promoted to Portland from Class A Lancaster on July 15. He batted .185 in his first 12 games with one extra-base hit (a double) and one RBI.

Since then, Anderson is batting .436 in 13 games, with seven doubles, five home runs and 22 RBI. His overall average is .333.

Hitting coach Dave “Joppie and I worked on a mechanical thing … gave me a chance to use my swing and not work against myself,” Anderson said.

Anderson, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds, has a smooth swing, but the Red Sox will want to see power, too, from their first baseman.

...

Khoury has hit safely in 24 of his last 31 games, batting .318 ... Hall’s 11 home runs leads the current roster ... Zach Daeges improved his average to .316 with two hits ...

David Hood - Drive lose four-run lead, fall in 10

The Greenville Drive let a four-run lead heading into the eighth inning slip away and lost 5-4 in 10 innings to the Lexington Legends in front of 5,183 fans at Fluor Field Thursday night

...

Greenville starter Chad Povich was outstanding, allowing only one hit and striking out six in his five innings of work, but the Legends struck for four runs off Greenville reliever Kyle Foster to tie the game in the eighth inning.

Foster was on the mound in the 10th and threw a wild pitcher to score a runner from third base for the winning run, and the Drive were unable to mount a threat in the bottom of the inning.

...

Earlier in the day, the Drive announced that one of their best hitters, outfielder Ryan Kalish, had been promoted to the Lancaster JetHawks (Advanced A) of the California League.

In 96 games for Greenville, Kalish hit .281 with three homers and 32 RBI.

Spinners' catcher sparks comeback

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Catcher Tim Federowicz drove in three runs, two of them with a sixth-inning single that put the Spinners ahead to stay, sparking the Lowell Spinners to a 5-4 triumph over Williamsport last night and giving them a three-game sweep of the series with the Crosscutters.

...

Luis Sumoza cracked his seventh homer -- the first by a Spinner in nine games -- and Federowicz also socked his first professional homer.
