Mike Szostak - PawSox 5, Yankees 1 -- Martinez, Jones pitch PawSox to victory

Edgar Martinez scattered four hits in six shutout innings and earned his seventh win against two losses. “I was very impressed with Edgar Martinez,” said manager Ron Johnson. “We needed that game tonight. We needed somebody to step up and give us an opportunity.”

First baseman Sandy Madera had two hits, his second being an eighth-inning solo home run just to the left of the 400-foot mark in center field. Jeff Corsaletti had two doubles.

...

A clutch relief performance by left-hander Hunter Jones. He replaced Beau Vaughan in the eighth inning with runners on first and second and walked Juan Miranda, loading the bases, but got cleanup hitter Shelley Duncan to pop up to catcher Dusty Brown, Ben Broussard to hit a sacrifice fly to left and Cody Ransom to strike out. He turned a potential big-inning into a one-run shutout spoiler.

“That was the biggest part of the game. That was the save time of the game, and he came in and did what he was supposed to do,” Johnson said.

Mike Szostak - Zink relishes game he pitched for Red Sox

Zink gave himself a shot of confidence when he set second baseman Ian Kinsler, shortstop Michael Young and center fielder Josh Hamilton down in order in the first.

“I was like, gee, I just got out three All-Stars,” he said. “I made it through that and didn’t really think about anything else after that. I just kept doing what I do and throw strikes … same thing I’ve been doing all year.”

Ground balls that found holes and timely Texas hits ultimately did Zink in, but he lost his edge in the bottom of the first while sitting through Boston’s 10-run barrage. He even went into the batting cage twice to throw to stay warm.

“After sitting that long, I didn’t feel like I was in a groove anymore. I just didn’t feel quite as comfortable,” he said.

Steve Krasner - Pauley sent back to Pawtucket; Bailey called up

BOSTON -- Pitcher David Pauley and utilityman Jeff Bailey traded places on the Red Sox roster after last night’s game.

Pauley had been promoted from Pawtucket yesterday, taking Charlie Zink’s spot on the roster. It was an emergency move made because the bullpen had worked hard in the 19-17 slugfest Tuesday night. That gave the Sox 13 pitchers for the game.

With Jon Lester working into the eighth on the way to his 11th victory, Pauley was not needed. He was sent back to Pawtucket and will be replaced today by Bailey, the veteran slugger who is having an outstanding year at Pawtucket. Bailey, who had two hits and an RBI last night, provides more help at first, freeing Youkilis to work more at third with Lowell out.

The Red Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Marcus McBeth off waivers from Cincinnati and optioned him to Pawtucket. McBeth spent this year pitching for Louisville where he was 1-1 with a 6.20 ERA in 24 games. To make room on the 40-man roster the Sox designated Lincoln Holdzkom, who had been in the Pawtucket bullpen, for assignment.

Eric Benevides - PawSox draw nearer to Scranton

PAWTUCKET --- Edgar Martinez stopped the bleeding.

The Pawtucket Red Sox starting pitcher tossed six shutout innings on Wednesday night against the top team in the International League's North Division, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, allowing just four singles and two walks and helping the PawSox score a 5-1 win and earn a split of their two-game series at McCoy Stadium.

...

The PawSox gave Martinez all the support he needed by producing a run in the second inning, two in the fourth, and another run in the fifth.

Their run in the second came with two outs, as Josh Wilson doubled down the left-field line and scored on a bloop single to right by Gil Velazquez that just fell in front of right fielder Shelley Duncan. Wilson was almost thrown out at the plate on a strong one-hop throw by Duncan, but the throw bounced past catcher Chad Moeller.

Two innings later, the PawSox quickly doubled their lead when Jeff Corsaletti and Wilson got things going with back-to-back doubles belted into the gap in right-center. Wilson then went to third on a soft grounder to second by Velazquez, and with two outs, Jeff Bailey drove him home with a line single to left.

The lead then grew to 4-0 in the fifth, when with one out, Dusty Brown doubled to deep center and came home on a line single to left by Sandy Madera.

...

The PawSox were quite busy in the transactions department on Wednesday. The day started with knuckleballer Charlie Zink's returning to the PawSox (following his major league debut on Tuesday) and fellow 13-game winner David Pauley's getting called up to Boston. Reliever Lincoln Holdzkom was also designated for assignment, and Snyder, who had been on the disabled list since June 3 with a recurring right groin strain, was activated. ...

Kevin Thomas - Dogs' ace gets another victory; Kris Johnson continues his emergence as Portland's top starter, helping beat Altoona.

Kris Johnson kept his credentials as Portland's ace on Wednesday night, pitching the Sea Dogs to a 5-3 victory over the Altoona Curve at Hadlock Field.

Johnson (8-7) gave up six hits, no walks and two runs -- one earned -- while striking out eight over 52/3 innings.

Portland got solo home runs from Mickey Hall, his 10th, and Josh Reddick, his third. Argenis Diaz went 2 for 4, including a two-run single, and Daniel Bard got his fourth save by striking out 4 of 5.

...

Johnson had three pitches working, starting with a fastball in the low-90s on the corners.

"The control is there with my fastball," Johnson said. "I'm keeping my curveball down. The change-up's down. And I'm getting weak hits, which is what they want."

Johnson carried a shutout through five innings but tired in the sixth, allowing three hits.

...

Bard entered with two on and two outs in the eighth. A wild pitch scored a run, but Bard settled down to record his strikeouts on fastballs reaching 99 mph.

NOTES: The Boston Red Sox released Sea Dogs pitcher Kyle Jackson late Tuesday night. Jackson, 25, was a 32nd-round pick in 2001. He first came to Portland in 2005. After a strong 2006 (2.45 ERA), Jackson's numbers declined. He was 5-3 this year, but with a 6.47 ERA. In his last 302/3 innings, he allowed 29 earned runs.

David Hearne - Matsuo’s gem extends Greenville Drive win streak to four

But Matsuo (5-4) was brilliant on the mound, carrying a no-hitter through 6 1-3 innings, in a 7-3 win over the Lexington Legends. The win pushed Greenville’s winning streak to four games.

“(Terumasa) did a lot of things well tonight. He was able to do a good job as far as keeping the number of guys on base limited, but when they got on base he did a nice job controlling the running game,” Drive manager Kevin Boles said. “He’s very bright and he works hard. He’s a true professional in every sense of the word.”

Matsuo, coming off of a no-decision in which he went seven shutout innings, struck out six while giving up two runs on two hits.
