Michael Hines - STILL LEARNING THE GAME

Ellsbury possesses an abundance of skill, confidence and speed, attributes that vaulted the Madras native from little-known September call-up to World Series cult hero last fall when he batted a staggering .438 in Boston’s sweep of the Colorado Rockies. Those qualities still are there, but on this day the timing wasn’t. Ellsbury made contact with Jenks’ next pitch, a 96-mph fastball over the heart of the plate, but popped it meekly to third baseman Juan Uribe. Three pitches later, the game was over. The White Sox won, 6-5.

The missed opportunity was a fitting end to a miserable day at the plate for Ellsbury, who recently saw his batting average drop to a midseason-low .259. The dog days of summer have not been kind.

For all of the attention and all of the expectations and all of the adoring fans, Boston’s darling of four magical October games still is, officially speaking, a rookie who is adjusting to life as a Major League Baseball player.

“Last year, everything he did was right,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “He gave us a huge lift. Playing every day in the big leagues as opposed to six weeks is different.”

This season, Ellsbury is confronting a “bump in the road” that the manager said is common for young players.

“He’s been tremendous,” Francona said. “There’s a lot of things that we hang our hat on with him. We think he’s going to be a very good major-league player because of the way he handles himself, not just his skills.”
