Kevin Thomas - It's not a line-drive hit, but it's a perfect ending; The Sea Dogs complete a 6-0 homestand, beating Harrisburg in the ninth on Zach Daeges' RBI dribbler.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning, Daeges' slow ground ball toward third base scored the winning run in the Portland Sea Dogs' 3-2 victory over Harrisburg at Hadlock Field.

"It wasn't my best at-bat. It wasn't what I was looking to do," said Daeges, who is batting .319. "But we got the win."

...

Argenis Diaz was 2 for 4 and scored all of Portland's runs. Jorge Jimenez, batting behind Diaz, went 3 for 4 and moved Diaz into scoring position before each of the runs.

...

Mills retired his first seven batters, but allowed four hits and two runs in the fourth.

Portland tied it in the bottom of the inning when Diaz singled, moved up on Jimenez's groundout and scored on a single by Iggy Suarez.

Harrisburg starter Justin Jones and Mills settled down, and relievers Josh Perrault of the Senators and Miguel Asencio of the Sea Dogs each pitched two shutout innings.

Bard, who has allowed two earned runs in his last 32 1/3 innings for a 0.56 ERA, maintained his domination by retiring the side in order on 13 pitches in the ninth, with one strikeout.

David Hearne - Power beat Greenville Drive

The Greenville Drive got a solid pitching performance from Jose Capellan despite their 5-2 loss to West Virginia on Sunday at Fluor Field.

The Drive left three runners in scoring position, and couldn’t give Capellan the offensive support he needed.

...

The Power jumped on top in the first inning on Eric Fryer’s monster home run to center, but Capellan was able to get out of the inning with a pop-out and a strikeout.

Capellan settled down, and went five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out six.

“He left a ball up in the first and ran into some trouble, but he settled in and was able to limit some damage. He was aggressive with the fastball and did a pretty nice job for us,” Boles said.

...

David Mailman went 2-4 for the Drive, extending his season-high hitting streak to 11 games.

Mailman is 18-for-47 during his streak, with nine RBIs and three home runs.

“(Mailman) has come a long way,” Boles said. “He had some struggles early this year, but he’s doing a good job using all parts of the field. He started out in the bottom tier of our lineup, and has worked his way up and handled the leadoff spot well. It’s a credit to the work he’s put in.”

Willie T. Smith III - Fluor Field set to fete 1,000,000th fan tonight

Attendance at Drive home games stands at 997,026 since opening Fluor Field, which means the team would need to draw 2,974 fans tonight to reach the mark.

Daniel Goldberg - Loop making a statement in starting rotation

The opportunity came when Tony Bajoczky retired and Loop has made good use of it. He earned his third victory in four tries as the JetHawks defeated the Mavericks 7-2.

"It was a spot that I really wanted to be in," the southpaw said after Sunday's game at The Hangar. "That made it that much easier to prepare myself and succeed as oppose to a guy who had been in the 'pen and isn't sure about starting."

Loop pitched six innings, his longest outing as a JetHawk, allowing two runs on three hits. It was the third time in his four starts that he limited the opposition to three hits. His ERA in those four starts is 1.80.

...

Kyle Fernandes and Jason Blackey combined to pitch three perfect innings to end the game and reduce the JetHawks' magic number for clinching the best overall record in the South Division to 10.

Chaz Scoggins - Sumoza, Spinners sizzle

LOWELL -- Luis Sumoza had a terrific month of July for the Lowell Spinners, hitting .323 with a .548 slugging percentage while ripping nine doubles, four homers, reeling off a 16-game hitting streak, and driving in 21 runs in 23 games.

...

Sumoza socked two homers and a double, tying a club record with 10 total bases, and put together his third five-RBI game of the season last evening, powering the streaking Spinners to their sixth straight victory, an 11-5 pasting of Aberdeen in front of another SRO crowd of 5,030 at LeLacheur Park that gave Lowell a sweep of the three-game series.

Sumoza, now hitting .297 with 15 doubles, nine homers, and 36 RBI in 45 games, doesn't even want the three-day All-Star break the New York-Penn League now takes. The Spinners lead the Stedler Division by 6 1/2 games with 17 to play.

...

Outfielder Kade Keowen, who was hitting .239 with six doubles and 10 RBI in 33 games, was promoted to Lancaster of the advanced Class A California League after the game.

Colts sell hard-throwing righty Romero to Red Sox

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts needed the services of righty pitcher Robert Romero after the fireballing Mitch Lively was sold to the San Francisco Giants in late July. In his short time with the Colts, he certainly did his job, dominating United League hitters to the tune of four hits and three runs in 9 1/3 innings, striking out 14 while picking up two saves in eight outings, including seven scoreless. Romero only allowed hits in two of those games, and just like Lively, his performances have not gone unnoticed.

On Sunday, Romero was rewarded for his efforts, as the Colts sold his contract to the Boston Red Sox organization, making him the second San Angelo pitcher, after Lively, to be picked up by an Major League organization this season.

"I'm so excited to be getting this opportunity," Romero said. "I can't say enough about what [Colts manager] Doc Edwards did for me here in San Angelo and I will always be thankful for him helping me get to where I am now."

...

Romero regularly threw his fastball in the low-to-mid 90s with the Colts, and hit 96 miles an hour on several occasions. But Edwards thinks that if he sticks with one team and does not get hit by rainouts as the Colts have recently, he may throw even harder.

...

Romero, who despite his Texas roots, grew up a Boston fan, will be sent to the Lowell Spinners, in the short-season Class A New-York Penn League. The Red Sox organization want Romero to contribute to the Spinners' stretch drive, as Lowell is in first place in its division with three weeks left in the season.

(LANCASTER, CA) - It was a gusty evening with the wind blowing out at Clear Channel Stadium, but the JetHawks pitched like they didn't notice. Adam Loberstein - Former Jesuit star Anderson having major impact in minors

Anderson's wild west is in the past. However, he left a lasting impression.

"This guy's unbelievable," Lancaster manager Chad Epperson said of his former first baseman. "The way the young man conducts himself on and off the field, it's pretty impressive. You've got a true professional."

Anderson, who Epperson calls the top hitting prospect in the Red Sox system, earned his way to Lancaster after batting .288 with 10 home runs and 35 doubles as a first-year pro in "low-A" Greenville (S.C.).

He didn't disappoint in his JetHawks debut, hitting .343 in 10 games to close out 2007. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder kept hitting in Lancaster this season, posting a .317 average with 33 extra-base hits in 77 games.

Anderson acknowledges the fact there are high expectations of his play, but he's learned to cope with them by simplifying things.

"It's things like, 'Oh, man, you should hit 50 homers, have ridiculous numbers, do ridiculous things,' " Anderson said. "I kind of broke it down, made the issue a little bit smaller.

"I just go have fun and try not to worry about that stuff anymore. I know that it's there, but don't worry about it."

Entering Saturday, Anderson is batting .365 through 26 games with the Sea Dogs. His on-base (.455) and slugging percentages (.647) are also higher in the Eastern League than they were in the California League.

Thursday night, Anderson had four RBIs against Altoona, and Friday night, he went4 for 4 against Harrisburg.
