Kelly's stats in winter ball a a bit grim. His batting ave. as of Jan.3/05 is just .191

Good story in the Boston Globe today. It looks like Shoppach is focused on improving - and it's nice that he continues to work on building stronger bonds with the pitchers (especially the latin ones).

QUOTE
In the meantime, Shoppach seeks constant self-improvement. Hence, the winter league experience. Each team, he said, allowed only five non-natives on the roster. Shoppach had only two teammates (Donovan Osborne and Brian Myrow) who spoke English as a first language.

It's only spring training, but this (from Projo a few days ago) is notable:

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Kelly Shoppach played the final three innings and belted two of Pawtucket's four home runs as the PawSox rolled to a 9-1 win yesterday over the Rochester Red Wings.

Shoppach entered the game in the seventh inning and hit a solo homer, giving Pawtucket a 5-2 lead. Shoppach, who had three hits and four RBI against Rochester Saturday, added a two-run shot in the ninth.

Kelly Shoppach:

Soxprospects.com says:
QUOTE
Top-line defensive catcher - great arm and great glove.  Hits the ball to all fields and draws a lot of walks. Has excellent power for a catcher, and Boston also loves his OBP. Strikes out a lot, and has below average speed. A  natural leader, Shoppach has the potential to take Varitek's spot down the line.

Cambridge interviews Shoppach

Shoppach struggled offensively in Pawtucket last year, hitting just .233, but his power numbers wer not bad, 25 doubles and 22 HRs. He also struggled in winter ball, playing for Escogido, going 13 for 68 (.191), with just 2 extra base hits (both doubles). His OPS was a dreadful .461. Soxprospects.com lists him as the Sox 9th best prospect, and he is the only C in the top 20. They have his ETA as late 2005. If Tek or Mirabelli go down this year, he should see some action. The PawSox open their season @ Indy on April 7th.
BostonSox37
Shoppach is off to a great start:

He is 5 for 13 (.385) with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. 3 of the 5 hits have been for extra bases, two of them are HRs. His OPS is 1.390. The only thing that concerns me a bit is he has 4 Ks in 13 at bats. I know it is early, but Shoppach looks like he will rebound well from a rough year at the plate in 2004, when he had his power but his other offensive stats were very weak.
BostonSox37
Shoppach hit his 4th HR of the year last night in a 11-3 loss. He is now 10 for 36 (.278) with a .395 OBP, and a .667 slg. His 1.062 OPS is impressive, but it would be nice to see him knock in a few more runs. He has only 5 RBI on the season, despite hitting 4 HRs. Although it is early, he looks like he is bouncing back well from a tough 2004 season.

In reality he has only batted in one run (5RBI-4HR=1), which is kinda of crummy. Then again, he does have an incredible OPS right now (way over 1) and his batting average is hovering near .300.

Shoppach has really been slugging the shit out of the ball so far this year. He hit is 7th HR of the season last night, putting him 2nd in the IL (Daubach is 1st). He is hitting .278, but he has been walking a lot, with an OBP of .409. 10 of his 17 hits this year have been XBH, and his slugging % is .722. His OPS of 1.131 is easily the highest on the PawSox. It is difficult to tell how he is doing defensively without being able to watch him, the only indicator I can find is the he has 1 error on the season.

His stats for the year:

17 for 54, .278, 7 HR, 12 RBI, 12 runs scored, 11 BB 16 K. .409 OBP, .722 SLG, 1.131 OPS.

yes it would be nice if he was knocking in more runs but we cant blame him for this he is doing his job its the batters ahead of him that are not getting on base for him to drive in (i am assuming). not sure because i don't have a chance to see the games but with the numbers he is putting up i would say its not his fault that he is not driving in more runs my only question is does this help his trade value or is he going to be teks back up next year??

27 Games into the season and he still is tearing up triple-A. .283/.389/.554/.943 is darn good, and he is hitting a homerun once every 13 at bats.

He is really starting to turn things around.

Shoppach has struggled lately. His average is down to .260, and his OPS is down to .872, it was at 1.131 two weeks ago. It has also been two weeks since he homered, keeping him at 7 on the season. He has just one extra base hit since April 29. He is striking out in %26 of his ABs, and he has twice as many Ks as BBs (26 to 13). The question is, which is the real Kelly Shoppach? Is it the one that was killing the ball and getting on base in the first few weeks, or is it the one with minimal power and a Mark Bellhorn-esque K rate? My guess is he is somewhere in the middle.

2005 stats:

26 for 100, .260 avg, .362 OBP, .510 slg. 4 2B, 0 3B, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 20 runs scored, 26 K, 13 BB.

It is tough to gage how he has been defensively without actually watching him, he has made 2 errors in 29 games.
BostonSox37
Shoppach's slump appears to be over. He hit HR # 10 last night. Shoppach has a pretty good BABIP at .407. In his last 12 at bats, he has 7 hits and 5 Ks. He has also showed very good plate discipline this year, which has always been one of his strentghs. His OBP is .121 higher than his average.

His stats so far in 2005:

33 for 112, .286 avg, .407 OBP, .598 SLG, 1.005 OPS. 5 2B, 0 5B, 10 HR, 22 RBI, 32 runs scored, 18 BB, 33 K.

Shoppach gets the call!

Shoppach had a minor injury that had him DHing for the PawSox, but that has healed and he has been catching again. Now he is going to get his first shot at the bigs.

So, you think this kid is getting shipped off in a trade for some middle-relief help? He's stuck behind Varitek, so it makes sense.
BostonSox37
Shoppach had a good night at the plate last night going 2 for 4 with a HR (14) and 5 RBI. He has been doing well in the IL, but he struggled in his brief time with the big club. It is tough to gage what his trade value is.

49 for 175, .256 avg, .360 OBP, .549 SLG, 54 K, 22 BB, 9 2b, 14 HR, 36 RBI, .909 OPS.
BostonSox37
Shoppach update:

He went 3 for 4 last night, with 2 HRs, 5 RBI, and 3 runs scored. The HRs were 18 and 19 on the season.

66 for 245, .269/.369/.551 19 HRs, 53 RBIs, 46 runs. He Ks a lot (69), but he walks a lot as well (31) His isolated power is very good (.282). 31 of his 66 hits have been for extra bases. Defensively he has 5 errors.
BostonSox37
Shoppach has homered in 3 straight games, as he just hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 5. He now has 21 on the year, and is increasing his trade value on a nightly basis.
BostonSox37
It has been a while, I have been slacking. Here are Shopp's final 2005 stats:

.253/.352/.507 .859 OPS. 102 G, 371 AB, 94 hits, 16 2B, 26 HR, 75 RBI, 188 TB, 46 BB, 116 K. In the field, he made 5 errors.

Kelly was among the league leaders in many categories: His 26 HR led the Paw Sox and put him 6th overall in the International League, just 4 homers behind J-F Griffin who lead the league with 30. His 75 RBI also led the Paw Sox and put him 14th in the IL. his .507 SLG put him 10th in the IL. By position, he was first in the league among all catchers in HR and SLG, and 2nd in RBI.

Strikeouts were an issue this year, as he struck out in %31.2 of his ABs. For comparison, Bellhorn struck out in %33.8 of his ABs in 2004.

The goal of minor leaguers is to improve, so here is 2004 and 2005 side by side:

04: .233/.320/.461 .781 OPS 399 ABs 22 HR, 65 RBI. 46 BB, 138 K.
05: .253/.352/.507 .859 OPS 371 ABs 26 HR, 75 RBI. 46 BB, 116 K.

As you can see, he improved in virtually every area. In less ABs, he had more HR and RBIs, the same # of walks, and significantly less Ks (although he still had a lot).

Tek is here long term, and it looks like Dougie does not want to go anywhere either, he has found his niche. It is hard for me to see Shoppach getting much PT at an MLB level barring significant injury to one of our catchers. He was 25 this season, he will be 28 when Tek's contarct is up. He could be a nice chip at next year's deadline.

Shoppach was called up to Boston, and should be with the team tonight.

Joe McDonald, ProJo - PawSox Notebook: Shoppach, Delcarmen get the call to Boston; Catcher Kelly Shoppach and reliever Manny Delcarmen are promoted to the parent Red Sox after their outstanding seasons at Pawtucket.

PAWTUCKET -- PawSox catcher Kelly Shoppach was back in the lineup yesterday after missing five games because of an ankle injury suffered in a collision last Tuesday in Ottawa.

Despite it being the last game of the season for Pawtucket, it was critical for Shoppach to prove he was healthy enough for a call-up to Boston. He caught five innings and went 0-for-1 with a walk and strikeout and showed no ill effects from the injury while running the bases. As a result, he was told after the game that he will join pitcher Manny Delcarmen as the final call-ups to Boston.

SoxFan24
Maybe the wrong topic, but how can Manny be called up? It hasn't been ten days.
RedSoxAnni
The AAA season is over. Players can be called up after 10 days or at the end of the season.
BostonSox37
As you all know, Shoppach's tenure in the Red Sox organization is now over...best of luck to him in Cleveland.

I've been a big Shoppach guy for some time now, but I understand the deal. Best of luck, Kelly.

Dude, they have Ken Huckaby!

Seriously, good luck Kelly. Catchers turning 26 as they enter the Majors still have a good chance. Here's to you reaching your first base safely as a Major Leaguer any way but the HBP you experienced in 2005.
MargoAdamsLoveChild
I think Kelly knew the writing was on the wall. They seemed like they went out of their way to stash him in AAA to use as a chip.

Best of luck, Kelly. May you never get a hit against the Red Sox, though.
