Full Version: Is Torre the worst NL park manager ever?

Torre refuses to use Mariano again with a tie late in the game. What is he waiting for?

The lead?

Note to Torre: a lead's not garanteed on the road. Try to preserve the tie first, especially when everyone in the pen except the guy you pulled (who was also the only guy in the pen to retire the Mets 1-2-3 all weekend) is DEAD F__KING TIRED!!!!!!! enraged.gif

If he was saving Mariano yesterday, I'd love to know what he was saving him for? He hadn't pitched much lately ANYway, but to not use him when the Yanks tied the game in the 8th is DOWNRIGHT CRIMINAL. enraged.gif enraged.gif enraged.gif

Why he PH for Prinz instead of sac bunting in the FIRST place with a man on first and no outs and Bernie and Jeter coming up (who each had 4 and 3 hits in the game respectively) is beyond stupid.

He's NEVER been able to manage in an NL park -- check the 1996 World Series, when he lets an exhausted Pettitte bat with the bases loaded and a slim 1-0 lead. Pettitte makes out, and walks the next man he faces in the 9th, and only an incredible play by O'Neill robbing Polonia of at LEAST a triple (and probably an inside the park HR) saves him from being exposed as an awful NL manager.

Some coaches just refuse to use this philosophy. I guess it's just, 'his style' or something. I would've used the best closer in baseball when he was needed though. And it was clear that he was needed then.

How do the Yank fans feel about this series with the Mets? Disappointed, pissed off, or a little of both? I'm seriously asking, because coming off the Sox series you guys had a chance to just make the AL East a laugher, and it seems the Mets just showed up.

Why don't you take this discussion to nyyfans.com.

It sucks no doubt, because it seems like the Mets had no offense until we showed up. As hard as the Yanks worked in the series with the Sox it was a real letdown to see them lay over for the Mets.

Torre is an over rated manager anyways. The Phil Jackson of MLB. Look at his record pre-Yankees Payroll. He is the man that is in the proverbial right place at the proverbial right time. When it comes time to actually coach, (this weekend) he chokes.

I second the notion of take it to Yankee message board.
donniebaseball
yea becasue there is NO talk of Red Sox on that board

If Red Sox fans are starting Red Sox fan-centric posts on NYYFANS.COM then they should be, and I'd bet they are, replied to in turn: "Take it to SOSH; Take it to royalrooters"

Actually I don't believe the Yankees had baseballs highest payroll until 2000 (maybe 1999?) In 96 Baltimore and LA were higher, in 1998 I believe Baltimore was still higher. Really not sure on 99, that might have been when they ended up on top. Joe's a good manager. He's also a fairly good NL park manager, he did manage the NL for years. Rivera was probably only getting one inning of work on sunday and I think Joe was probably worried about wasting Rivera too early in a tie game, especially after using him for 2 innings on thursday. Honestly, I think had Boston had Joe in the dugout during game seven they most likely win that series last fall.

PLEASE !

Look at Joe Torre before he joined the Yankees. His career winning percentage was .470 ( 894 - 1003 ). He proved then that he was a worse than average manager.

Steinbrenner's wallet alone raised Torre's winning percentage 138 points !

Don't get me wrong. Could you imagine how good the Yankees would be if they had an actual manager these past few years ? LaRusa ? Piniella ? Wilfred Brimley ?
Gold Dust Twins
OVERATED. Can't put it any other way or in any other words.
The arguement could be made that with the money spent and the lack of titles that Torre may be the worst Yankee manager ever.

Wow, three years. Impressive

What do some of these new members do? Is it a blind search, or are you really rolling up the sleeves and digging through page 48 of the threads list? On what planet is this a better move than a new thread?

I mean, leaving aside the Titanic stupidity of the statement in the actual post, the internet is just such a frightening place. Where are all you people living and how in the holy hell did you get so good at hiding your extreme shortcomings as people?

actually GDT is not a new member, just doesn't post much. He/she joined the board, coincidentally, one day after I did and a week after you.

According to his/her profile, something about a 4-year-old thread titled "Is Joe Torre the worst NL park manager ever?" was compelling enough to be bumped and for GDT to make his/her 74th ever post.

It wasn't a total waist; I got a chuckle out of seeing Sane Yankee Fan's name again.
