If you would like to contribute to help defray the cost of running the site, please click on the "Make A Donation" button above. It will bring you to a PayPal page where you enter the amount you'd like to donate and a place for you to enter your PayPal account login. If you do not have a PayPal account, you can start one by clicking on the button and following the instructions.
If you'd like to donate via regular, old-fashioned mail, please PM RedSoxAnni or MargoAdamsLoveChild.
We hope to add other methods of making donations soon, but for now, this is it.
To become a Rooters Supporter and have access to a special members-only forum and first crack at things such as t-shirts and outing tickets, the minimum donation is $15 per year. Oh, and your name at the bottom of the main page turns red! Woo hoo!
Thanks.
-MALC
Another request: If you make a donation using PayPal, or if you send us a check, PLEASE include your username. You can include your username next to your name on the PayPal "form". If you use a different email address when you access PayPal than you used when you registered on the board, your email address will not be in our database. And if you did not fill in the "name" window when you registered, I can't search for you by name either. For a lot of posters, the only information in our database is your username and email address that you gave us when you registered... So, please help by including your username with your donation. Thanks. Anni

An added note:
When you send in your donation, make sure to include your USERNAME in the notes.
If you use a different email with PayPal than you used when you registered for this board, we cannot figure out who you are.
I've sent emails to two people who did not include their usernames, and whose emails don't match our databases, and have not heard from them yet.
If you sent in a contribution, and have not been upgraded to supporter yet, please send me a PM and I will track you down.

OK, this is a stupid question that will get me laughed at, but how do I get paypal, and what do I need?

You can register at
Paypal.com and use it to pay for the donation. It will ask you to register a credit card with them, I think. You can register a bank account with them if you like, too. It is a service that most people that use Ebay use. If you register a bank account with them, it takes a few days to get activated. Paypal will make two deposits of like $.01, and $.02 into your bank account. You then have to tell them how much they deposited into your bank account in order to verify it is your account. I know it sounds confusing, but that is how it is done. It is safe, though. I use it to get payment from people when I sell things on Ebay, and it is generally how I pay for things, also.

Actually, if you donate, just post here or PM me. That way I'll know who it is.

Sweet Jesus, can you get that huge graphic off of the top of every page on the site? It's ugly, it's intrusive, and it's EVERYWHERE. Please let's not start whoring out this site with obnoxiously-placed ad links.

PLEASE include your username with your donation. If you don't, it may take me a while to "find" you in the database, and you may end up getting an email from me asking who you are.

Looks like the subscription link isn't working. It goes nowhere when i choose the paypal link. If i pay for a subscription, will that keep me from being locked out when the bandwidth spikes again?
MargoAdamsLoveChild
Dec 14 2004, 09:07 AM
Not necessarily, ManRamEm. If you're getting the "server busy" message, no one (including barstaff) is immune. Sometimes (rarely) we'll lock the board to members only, which you're OK on already.
As far as the link, what exactly is not working? Is it the "donate" button in the thread that is pinned at the top of the On The Field forum? Or the thing under "Purchase Paid Subscriptions" in your MY CONTROLS?
EDIT: I just checked it out. PayPal link in the pinned thread works great. But when I use the "Purchase Paid Subscriptions" option in MY CONTROLS, I can choose "PayPal" as my payment option but then when I choose the radial button and try to click "continue" it's not doing anything. The solution to this is to just click on the big "donate" gif next to the radial button. It then moves the transaction forward.

the board was shut down to

Ironically, my wife was buying a whole lot of books for Christmas gifts yesterday. As an enthusiastic new member, I clicked on redsoxnation.net and discovered that, except for the potential opportunity to contribute to you via Amazon.com, I was barred from the site.
I may contribute in the future, but I won't do it soon. The timing of everything was unfortunate, but it's difficult to defend contributions to a site that essentially closes when things get exciting.
PSF
Dec 14 2004, 10:55 AM
The site closes when things get exciting because if we didn't close it to some, it wouldn't work for ANYBODY.
Let alone the other sites I have on my server.
Here is the progression of events yesterday (and what I always do when it gets slammed)
1. Guests are barred
2. New Members are barred
3. Regular non-paying members are barred.
It has rarely gotten past #1. Yesterday, I had to enact step 2. If you get the 'too busy' message, EVERYBODY is getting that one.

PSF,
I'm impressed by the speed of your response. Thank you!
The priority hierarchy makes sense. Too bad that you didn't have it on the message that we received.
I understand that I was an exception. I didn't know anything about the Pedro news. I was just showing my wife an opportunity to help a good site instead of making a nominal contribution to UPromise, and the site didn't work at the moment of demonstration. The scene was moderately embarassing.
Best of luck raising money. This is a quality site. It's not worth the domestic turmoil to make a nominal contribution at this point, but I'll keep you in mind.
Sincerely,
Bill

Bill, thanks for thinking of us, anyway. For what it's worth, I was blocked out too and couldn't get in.
I think you'll find that other Sox sites attempt to be far less inclusive when their servers get slammed. It's unfortunate, but happens from time to time.

Does being a supporter also entitle one to change their group status to a name of their choosing (instead of A Capital City, AAA Pawtucket, etc.)? If so, how do you change that? If not, is it only post count that lets one change it?
Also, why did MALC send me 250 pictures of me, taken with a telephoto lens from the lampost by my bedroom window (without my knowledge or consent) with a note that "We are meant to be together" after I made the contribution?
EDIT: Lie inserted at end of post.

I will get to the renewals soon. I need to get through the entire membership list first.
One problem is that I do not have all the records. Kevin forwarded some of them to me, but not all of them. After I've checked all the membership records, I need to reconstruct the Supporters list. And keep my day job!

I've been through about 4,000 of the 5,000 records so far. I've culled over 1,000 members who hadn't logged on in over six months. Once I get through the rest of them, then I'll be able to semi-automate the membership list. It'll tell me who needs to renew, and who hasn't logged on in six months.
You'd be surprised at the number of "members" we had who registered and never logged on after that. We also had members who hadn't logged on since Dec. 2003.

Our focus on this will pay off in the long run. Plus it means our Supporters who signed up early in 2004 will get a couple extra months of Supporterdom without having to re-up, which is our present to you for being so loyal. And for us, as Anni said, it's tough to get to everything simultaneously because we have those day job things. (Actually, I have a night job and I'm at work now. But you know what I'm sayin'.)

Hey MALC,
I finally sold enough body fluids to help support the site through 2006 (e.g. $30). Why RSNet and not the bajillion + 1 sites I visit/post?
1. through RSNet, I've been able to score WS + SB DVDs
2. joined 2 way cool fantasy baseball leagues (and gearing up for Rooters football)
3. Cambridge's interviews/articles
4. following the horsehide heroes of Beantown
5. Moderator's rapid response to requests for site improvement
RSNet has provided Looies with the mirth, humor, wit, and insight that has been missing from his dull, simple life ever since Looies erroneously let his Reader's Digest subscription lapse.
