Red Sox picked 24th and 31st in the first round with a 37th pick in the supplemental round.

24 - Deven Marrero, SS, Arizona State
31 - Brian Johnson, LHP, Florida
37 - Pat Light, RHP, Monmount

I think it's interesting that they picked a slick fielding SS with their first pick. Could it be an indication that they have softened on the idea of Iglesias being the SS of the future? More likely it's just that they got good value out of Marrero since he was slated as a consensus top 5 pick before sliding this past season. Reminds me of a Patriots type of choice. I don't know much about the other two, but I'm assuming that Brian Johnson isn't the same guy who sings for AC/DC.

And the last slick-fielding shortstop the Sox picked from Arizona is now a slick-fielding second baseman!

Marrero is a case of picking the best player available. Pre-season mocks had him rated as a top 10 pick, but he changed his batting stance and it screwed up his average last year.

Brian Johnson seems to be a low ceiling (4/5 starter) but high floor (likely to reach his potential) guy. I was hoping he was a strategic draft pick that would accept a lower-than-slot deal to allow them to reach for a high ceiling guy in the supplemental round.

Light was projected by soxprospects as a potential second rounder. Haven't heard much about him, but there seemed to be some higher ceiling talent available when they picked (Lance McCullers. Matt Smoral, or Joey Gallo).

Sox fourth round pick, Ty Buttrey, won't be able to walk at his high school graduation since he was, you know, busy being drafted:

The MLB draft is boring and a crapshoot.

Power to the people!!!!

Quote

Sir: It is unfortunate that inaccurate information was reported in the media causing such negative attention on the positive accomplishments of Ty Buttrey and our school. Ty was never told he could not participate in graduation. That assumption was made and the media was contacted without anyone asking or consulting me. The goal of every principal is to move students forward toward graduation. It is the culmination of 13 years of hard work. I met with Ty Buttrey and his mother today at 4 p.m. to discuss his participation in the graduation ceremony. During the meeting today, I shared my thoughts about the situation and made a decision to allow Ty to participate in the graduation. This was the same decision I made for 2 other students who had conflicts or extenuating circumstances. No decision had been made prior to this meeting. I communicated my decision directly to Ty and his mother at today’s meeting. It is again unfortunate. We wish Ty well in his future endeavors. We are proud of all he has accomplished. He knows that I am proud of him and he knows that as his principal, I support him as I do my other students.
