Pedroia on DL with fractured foot

Dustin Pedroia had a CT scan and MRI this morning and doctors discovered a non-displaced fracture of the navicular mid-foot bone in his left foot. He was placed on the disabled list.

Infielder Angel Sanchez is here and has been activated.

Doctors are reviewing the tests. Pedroia will be examined in Boston on Monday. According to Terry Francona, the medical people do not yet know the extent of the fracture or how long Pedroia will be out.

Francona said it was too early to speculate on how long Pedroia would be out.

"I don't know that we have a parameter yet," Francona said. "When we know the severity of it, then we'll have some parameters. I think anybody that's been around Dustin would bet on him being quicker than anybody humanly possible healing. But they don't know the extent of it yet."

Francona could not rule out the possibility of surgery.

Francona said Hall would play second base for now, although that is subject to change.

Dr. George Theodore, an orthopaedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, will examine Pedroia on Monday.

Pedroia, who is on crutches with his foot wrapped, told reporters that he was disappointed but would do all he could to get back as quickly as possible.

The Sox have traded for Eric Patterson to help fill in for Pedey. This does not make me feel much better. While a better defender than Bill Hall, he has shown little ability to hit at the major league level.

The serviceable, but still mediocre OF replacement players have been backed up by our excellent IF, which is a big part of why the Red Sox have been winning in spite of the top 32 OFers on the team being injured. This is absolutely devastating, particularly in combination with the injury to Victor Martinez. I believe that our new strategy for winning games is called "Pitching and Youk/Beltre/Drew", because those are the only good defensive players we have left with Scutaro's muscle issues.

What's the status for Lowrie? Is he still out with mono? He's missing a big opportunity here with Pedey out and Scutaro's neck giving him troubles... these opportunities aren't going to come around much with Scutaro signed for a few years and Iglesias (sp?) waiting in the wings...

According to the Globe, Lowrie begins rehab assignment next week...

Anything to get Bill Hall very, very far away from 2B. Pedroia at 75% has to be a defensive upgrade. Hopefully Lowrie will get some playing time at SS over Scutaro once Pedroia is playing every day again.

Pedroia probably done for the year

Nothing is official yet, but according to major league source Dustin Pedroia will likely shut it down for the remainder of the season. Pedroia is expected to spend the next 10 days back in a boot to stabilize the left foot that got sore again after two games.

Surgery hasn't been ruled out, but the doctors will have a better idea of whether surgery is necessary after the 10 days is up. Word is the foot is healing and not reinjured, but not healing at the pace expected.

Amalie Benjamin, Globe - Pedroia surgery is likely; Reevaluation due in about seven days



The Red Sox second baseman will wear a boot on his foot for about seven days to stabilize the area, according to a statement released by the club yesterday. The Sox then will decide whether to continue with that non-operative course of action or have a screw surgically inserted into the broken foot.

With Pedroia experiencing discomfort after a brief return to the roster, the Sox sought second opinions from two outside doctors, Jonathan Deland and Robert Anderson, over the past couple of days, which led to this course of action.


This is not optimistic news, but I hope that they make a decision soon so he can be back in the spring ready to play.

Pedroia will have surgery

Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to have surgery to insert a screw in his left foot sometime tomorrow at Massachusetts General Hospital according to a major league source. Pedroia was examined last night by Massachusetts General Hospital foot specialist Dr. George Theodore in Baltimore. Theodore, along with Sox team physician Dr. Thomas Gill, has cared for Pedroia throughout the foot injury.
