So, despite all the great barbecue in the area, Kansas City fans appear to be substantially more physically fit than fans in the upper midwest / rust belt.

But holy shit do the women overdo the multiple caked on layers of clown makeup.

Anyone watching care to tell me why Middlebrooks is out of the game?

He appeared to have tweaked something on his left leg going to second and he really slowed up when he went to third. There's been no announcement yet. He did have a tight hamstring last week, so that could be the problem.

Thanks, Anni. Just what they need - an injury to their one productive player. Yeesh.

The announcement just came. Left hamstring tightness.

Meanwhile...Darnell McDonald really has not been good so far. About the only thing he has going for him right now is that his ERA is only half of Mark Melancon's ERA.

They just announced "tightness in left hamstring". Probably more of a precaution right now.

I hope...

I wouldn't worry too much. The right hamstring is the important one.

Given that this kid isn't going to get deep into the game for KC, I would rather have seen Sweeney come in for Middlebrooks' lineup spot and then put Punto in for Byrd or McDonald.

But oh well. That would use up the entire bench, so I guess it's too risky.

And then they go to Sweeney anyway the first time there's a righty into the game.

Really should have put him into that #6 spot, with Punto at #7.

Oh well. At least they took the lead.

Honest to God, can baseball players be in at least fairly good shape? It is embarrassing how many hamstring and muscle tweaks/pulls these guys get...

Not to say that baseball players shouldn't be in better shape in a lot of cases...

But in what other sport are you spending so much time going from dead stop to all out sprint to just standing there or sitting on a bench for minutes at a time doing literally nothing?

I don't ever remember pulling a quad or a hamstring playing basketball, but I've done it more than once playing softball, which isn't even a real sport.

What a huge inning for Bard.

Really, a huge game. The wheels completely came off the bus in the 2nd inning. To bounce back the way he did...it's the Royals, of course. But still a big step in his progress as a starting pitcher. Then to work out of that jam...good stuff. He's at 86 pitches now through 7. I'd love to see him finish this one.

And in other news, CNN is projecting that North Carolina will be passing the constitutional amendment banning baseball from getting married.

Wow, with the one AB last night WMB got a double. Doesn't that break some kind of record for conscutive games with an XBH for a rookie upon initial callup?

Am I dreaming?

I think I read that he tied Enos Slaughter for the record and needs one more in his next game to break it.
