Valentine is currently on his way to the DR to schmooze David Ortiz.

Ortiz & Wheeler have until Wednesday to accept or reject arbitration(or an alternative offer).
Finally some shoes are going to drop.

I wonder if he talks Ortiz into accepting the 1 year offer.

Maybe it's just not something that was ever publicized, but I don't recall ever hearing about Francona schmoozing. Same with Varitek. I always heard about Joe Torre and/or Derek Jeter talking to FA's or potential FA's to persuade them. Those stories never seemed to come out of Boston. I don't know. Maybe that stuff did happen but never really got out. Who knows? Anybody?

He's a persuasive guy. He could also talk him into a handie.

It sure sounds like Valentine will be more involved in potential signings or trades than Francona was.
I still expect a 2 year offer with a club option on the third for 10 mil a year.
Also expect Wheeler to accept an offer by Wednesday.

I could be wrong, but I heard rumblings of a handshake deal when he signed last year that if the Red Sox didn't pick up his option and he was a type A FA, he wouldn't be offered arbitration by the team, and if he was a type B, he wouldn't accept the arbitration offer.

As for Valentine, I think he's a really smart baseball manager and tactician. I think he will do a tremendous job preparing the team and working with the front office to incorporate all of the advanced statistical analysis into decision making. I HOPE he has learned his lessons from his previous mistakes with regards to throwing people (players, front office staff, and media) under the bus. I HOPE what appeared to be his massive egomania in the past was just an attempt to deflect negative attention away from the team, and he has learned to do so in a less destructive manner.

I don't think this has been mentioned, but apparently Bobby Valentine informed Dave Magadan that he'll be welcomed back as the hitting coach. That's probably a good thing since offense hasn't been the issue.

Since Magadan wasn't given permission to talk to other teams, my sense is that this was a front office/ownership decision.

Saying hello would be a step in the right direction for him.

In other news, it appears that the first back-end-of-the-rotation domino has dropped with Andrew Miller re-signing (arb eligible). I don't know why, but I still have hope that Miller puts it together. It'd be interesting to see two former UNC teammates pitching out of the back-end of the Red Sox rotation when they used to be pitching out of the front-end in college.

But teh crawford was teh loose.
His plantfoot is slow to tap the dirt. Hence: MegaDan's fault.

PS. What kind of name is Magadan? (Is it UK?) I'm baffled as to this man's heritage.

In German it means "a whale's vagina".

Magadan probably refers to a place. It could very well derive from Magdala or Magdalene. Could be Greek, possibly Jewish. I wouldn't count out Italian. Other than that, I have no idea.

I would have left off the RBIs line (redundant with Runs), but still, well played sir!

Andrew Miller isn't the back-end-of-the-rotation unless the season is already lost. He's the ass-end of Pawtucket's rotation, or possibly a reliever. I don't believe he's going to find his command now, after so many years of wandering in the wilderness. We shall see, I hope I'm wrong.
