And, in the interest of full disclosure, it was this rationale that caused me to be fine with the Crawford signing despite the absurd contract. The Sox were still hurting from the Teixeira situation and did not want a repeat of that, so they made their best offer upfront and pressured Crawford to take it or the offer would be pulled off the table.

And yet, the lesson of the Teixeira thing to me was that it turns out that Kevin Youkilis was a better option anyway, and at half the price.

You can call bullshit all you want, but Brian Cashman himself confirmed that he faked having interest in Crawford just to drive the price up for the Red Sox. The Yankees' interest plus the fact that Werth was already off the board forced them to act quick on Crawford.

Brian Cashman is a dork who can't even pick the right person to have an affair with. Its easy to proclaim genius after the fact.

Dear Clay Buchholz,

Please stop having sex with your "porn star" wife. It is affecting your performance.

Warmest regards,

If Brian Cashman told you he put a restraining order on a stalker, would you believe that bullshit too? Seriously, i don't care what Cashman said, it doesn't mean the Sox increased their offer because the Yankees feigned interest. I'm sure that's a nice "gotcha" moment for Cashman, but that doesn't make it true. So, bullshit.

I don't know why you'd think Cashman is lying. GM's do this all the time. It's not as evil a move as some would think. Cashman had dinner with Crawford's agent. That's all that needs to be done. The agent goes back to Theo and says "hey, I had dinner with Brian the other night" and the price has already increased. Cashman's marital issues and infidelities don't preclude him from having dinner with a player's agent, driving the price up in the process (not just for the Red Sox, mind you).

I don't think Cashman is lying. I do think that if the Red Sox added $20 million to the deal because Brian Cashman is having an affair with Carl Crawford's agent, then they aren't nearly as good at poker as the FromACtoLV guy.

...and that's my point. In Cashman's mind, he may have driven up the price, but I doubt that Theo would have been so reactionary as to see a GM go to dinner with an agent and crap his (and the people holding the cash's) pants. I don't think that would be very wise.

I can't believe you're all still arguing about the negotiations of a deal for a player who is not currently on the active Red Sox roster. The Red Sox paid too much for Crawford with or without Cashman's actions and hidden bangings of some agent. It's over. Let's panic about something different, shall we?

I really don't know why you're panicking about that. It's pretty unnecessary in this case.

Right. Who needs lube when you have wind chimes.

Should we be panicking about Buchholz? He was very good thrrough 6 innings and ran out of gas, again, in the 7th. The same thing happened to Bard 2 starts ago. I hope we go back to 13 pitchers and valentine starts pulling his starter a little earlier.

The starters have averaged under 6 innings per game. I hope he doesn't take them out earlier.

Buchholz has an ERA of almost 9. That's a run per inning... Something is wrong.

I understand that. I was just responding to the hope that they carry an extra pitcher and pull the starters earlier. The hope should be that the starters can make it through 7 innings without throwing gas on the fire.

Which is all the more reason to have both Aitchson and Cook in this bullpen with each guy being able to give you multiple innings.

Atchison needs to die his hair black for me to seriously consider him as a legitimate part of the bullpen. He looks like the Bullpen coach, or the beer guy, or an accountant - not a relief pitcher. Relief pitchers should all have to look like Curtis Leskanic.

Thanks,
MPS2

Perfect example. But in his playing days "The Mechanic" had long hair and looked crazy. Now he has short hair and looks drunk.
