From a SoSH poster:

Dale Arnold on WEEI is now reporting:

A Baltimore Sun sports reporter (didnt catch the name) was informed of it this morning as a "Major star would be sanctioned for the O's" would be announced today.

WFAN just called Arnold apparently.

ESPN Radio's Colin Cowherd just 'verified' this ... 10-game suspension. Cites USA Today.

Assuming now that this is true, Palmeiro has pissed away his HoF chances. No pun intended.

Holy crap! One of my friends, from the Philly area hinted at this. She said that the Philly talk radio was talking about somebody testing positive for roids and was gonna be outed after HOF weekend/trading deadline...I didn't think it would've been him...wow this is huge!

here it is:

USA TODAY

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, who testified before Congress on March 17 that he'd never used steroids, was suspended by Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday for 10 games for violating baseball's drug policy

So a violation of the drug policy. Doesn't specifically say steriods, but I think it is a relatively safe assumption.

He can't appeal a steriod suspension.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The usatoday story indicates that he "immediately appealed the disciplinary action."

Absolutely shocking. How stupid does he have to be to continue to use after being outed in Jose's book and being called before Congress. Not to mention the fact that he knows MLB is taking it more seriously. What an idiot, now the only way he gets into Cooperstown is if he buys a ticket.

I thought MLB didn't release the results of the tests? Just that if there was a positive test on their list of banned substances, then a player gets suspended without us actually knowing what they took.

This definately looks bad though.

I still haven't found the story anywhere on the net..which makes me a bit suspicious.  This would be absolutely shocking if true.  And if true, "poor Rapphy" my ass.  After the Congressional hearings, etc, if he was stupid enough to do em, he should get the max.

Baseball will be the least of his problems.  His lying to Congress will be much worse, esp with how emphatic he was about it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I totally agree. What kind of moron testifies before Congress that he never used roids then turns around and gets pinched for using?

What a buffoon...Trash his stats.

Confirmed by Verducci:SI

[QUOTE]NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Rafael Palmeiro, who last month became the fourth member of baseball's 3,000-hit, 500-home run club, tested positive for steroids, SI.com's Tom Verducci has confirmed."

The moment his voice cracked when testifying before congress, I knew he was lying.

And to think I was called out for believing Jose.

D'oh. If true, how dumb is Palmeiro to get caught in this day of increased scutiny.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

This day of increased scrutiny? I had thought that the day of increased scrutiny was back in Spring Training, and that there were only occasional random tests now.

A whole bunch of players who tanked early in the season have made remarkable comebacks: Giambi tops the list, and Sheffield is another; both were alleged to have used steroids previously. It appears to me that a whole bunch of players were gambling that they wouldn't get caught. Now that a big name has apparently been caught, let's see the impact.

Absolutely shocking. How stupid does he have to be to continue to use after being outed in Jose's book and being called before Congress. Not to mention the fact that he knows MLB is taking it more seriously. What an idiot, now the only way he gets into Cooperstown is if he buys a ticket.

Hall of Fame? Barry Bonds might still make it with his stats, but Palmeiro...this is really going to dent his chances for as long as BBWAA members remember the steroid scandal. Palmeiro may not make the HOF in his lifetime.

By the way, speaking of Jose's book, wasn't there a pitcher who used to be on the Red Sox who was alleged by Canseco to have used steroids, too? :eyes

If true, this would be very odd if it was from a recent test.  If it was the release of results from a test done before the steroid scandal became big news, that would make more sense.  It's hard to believe that someone who has been hinted as a steroid-user would be using now.  Very odd, and it will interesting to hear what the real story is.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

was it steroids or a 'banned substance', also they might have figured out a way to beat a masking agent on a test so he thought that he was safe, or I'm not sure whether there is a test for human growth hormone or androgel, maybe they have one now

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Absolutely. I was about to post this, but this gives Canseco quite a bit of credibility.

If people are saying that Barry Bonds should be banned from the HOF because of steroid use, then shouldn't Palmeiro??? Palmeiro doesn't strike me as the asshole that Bonds is, but if we want Bonds banned, we should hold the same for Raffy.

I kind of feel bad for the guy, but at the same time, he deserves whatever ramification stem from this.
