Game 4: FINAL: SOX 3, Angels 2 - ALDS Champions!

Scheduled starters: John Lackey (12-5, 3.75 season; 0-1, 2.70 postseason) v. Jon Lester (16-6, 3.21 season, 1-0, 0.00 postseason)
The game will be on TBS
Boston weather: 4 pm observation at KBOS: Wind out of the northwest at 14 mph, with gusts to 21 mph, visibility 10 miles, few clouds at 5,500 feet, broken layers at 8,500 and 30,000 feet, temperature 58F, DP 34F
Forecast: Mucho chilly! We had a short wave disturbance with a cold front over southern NE today, which caused scattered showers and some (YIKES) snow pellets through the area. That's all moving off the coast, and there is dry, cold, dense air behind it. The winds will diminish after sunset, and the skies will clear, and that will set up a lot of radiational cooling. It will be cold at the game, although not as damp as last night. It could be in the low 40s by the time the game ends.
Wear mittens.

Big game for Lester, and I'm betting Pdroia breaks out of the slump. I have the Sox winning 5-2. I'm not to be denied the pleasure of quoting this post tomorrow, after the sox win 5-2. So bank on a win, and bank on it being 5-2.

I was surprised to see players' "breaths" last night. Probably same tonight.

From WEEI.com
"Sean Casey has yet to see action this series, in part because the proper pitching matchup has not existed, and in part because Casey's limitations on the bases and in the field--especially against an aggressive Angels team--make it more difficult to get him in a game. "Having the more agile defense is very important for us because of the way they play the game," Francona said. ...Francona was pleased with the Game 3 performance of Josh Beckett, saying that the rotation anchor was just missing on a number of pitches, and crediting the Angels with a surprisingly patient offensive approach. -- Alex Speier (UPDATED - Oct. 6, 5:11pm)"

Perhaps.
But Lackey does have 6.34 ERA in 8 career starts at Fenway, with 8 HR allowed, and a stellar line of .318/.373/.552/.925 against him. That is, by the way, his worst ERA at any park where he's started more than 1 game, and his worst OPS+ allowed anywhere.
Lester was reasonably ok at Fenway this year. 11-1, 2.49 ERA. Decent, you know.
I'm not that worried about momentum. The momentum of Francisco Rodriguez's outing last night suggests to me that he's about 3 pitches away from giving up a bomb, if it ever reaches that point.

Is there something about Lackey's approach and stuff that make him susceptible to a team like the Sox? I'm thinking of back when Barry Zito always put up good numbers but the Sox hit him - I always figured that it was because the Sox had a really patient lineup and would lay off the curve, and then CRUSH the 88 mph straight as an arrow heater. The Sox're one of the better offensive ballclubs in the AL, sure, but I can't figure out why they have always done so well against Lackey. Maybe it's a fluke, but if it is I hope it lasts at least one more game.

The Angels will have to blow the Sox out for that to happen.
They do not have a closer. K-Rod has been absolutely awful in this series, and he just threw 33 pitches last night. Do you know how many times he threw that many pitches in an outing during the regular season? Once.
Earlier in the series, Mike Scioscia brought K-Rod in for a multi-inning appearance. Do you know how many times he did that during the regular season? Zero.
I am not afraid of K-Rod. If the Angels want to win tonight, they better hope they have a 4 run lead in the 9th.
Good luck with that.

An avoidable sequence-- hopefully this won't come back to haunt us.

Second, Gil Velazquez?? Hundreds of guys in the minor-league system, and this is the best we could do?
It has to be someone from the 40 man roster and the player being replaced MUST sit out the next series as well.
Nice 1-2-3 start for Lester.
