Hey, Hoynsie: Paul Hoynes answers your Indians questions
Hey, Hoynsie: Why would the Indians not trade Kelly Shoppach to Boston for Clay Buchholz or another young starter? Is Red Sox GM Theo Epstein not willing or is it our guys? -- Richard Gingras, Boston.
Hey, Richard: The Red Sox love their young players with good reason. They've done a great job developing them.
But if there's a reluctance to trade Shoppach, I think it would come from the Indians' end. Victor Martinez missed most of last season following elbow surgery. Shoppach showed he could handle the pitching staff and hit for power.
There's a chance Martinez could play a lot more first base in 2009, so I think the Indians want to make sure they're protected at catcher. They have Wyatt Toregas, Chris Giminez and Carlos Santana in the minors, but they're not ready for the big leagues yet.
That being said, outside of Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee, I don't think there's a player the Indians wouldn't trade. But they'd have to be overwhelmed to trade Shoppach.
