From Joe McDonald, ProJo
FORT MYERS, Fla. _ No, not that Clemens.
Boston College pitcher Dane Clemens -- no relation to Roger -- worked the bottom of the third inning for the Eagles and retired Julio Lugo (ground out to third), Rocco Baldelli (line out to second) and David Ortiz (fly out to center).
The at-bat against Ortiz was an interesting one. Clemens threw a couple of off-speed pitches for strikes, which got a nod of approval from the Red Sox slugger. But when Clemens challenged him with a fastball, Ortiz crushed it to deep center field onlyl to be caught at the wall for the final out.
Clemens was greeted by all of his teammates as he walked off the field.

Good to see that baseball is back. It feels a little bit warmer already.

All the BC kids are watching Varitek hit? Oh, right-handed.
Harold Reynolds was talking about this the other day on the MLB network. He was talking about a switch hitter moving to only one side of the plate, and said that when he was playing, the thought of facing a right-handed pitcher from the right side of the plate (or vice versa) was very uncomfortable. As he put it, a career switch-hitter has been looking at pitches from the opposite hand pretty much his whole baseball life (Little League, college, minors, majors). To hit only from one side would be far worse than having a negative split righty vs. lefty.
I hadn't really thought of it that way. Reynolds was saying that if Varitek moved to only one side of the plate, fans would be screaming for him to go back to switch-hitting pretty quickly.
