AJ Burnett has a no hitter through 6 at Tampa. I hope nobody mentions it and jinxes him.

Edit: Who am I kidding? He's got no shot. He'll probably be on the DL by the 8th inning.

yanks will still win, but man, listening to them ask cone about his no-no, and talking about the forthcoming greatness, only to see him give up the 3 straight hits, then let the game get tied up, was just very enjoyable

I want to alert you guys that Brett Gardner is turning into a pretty dangerous player for the Yanks.

I noticed that. Round about the 50th time that John Sterling mentioned Burnett had a no hitter going in the 6th, I thought it was kind of odd.
"I'm John Sterling - and I laugh in the face of baseball superstitions. Ha!"

Some people would argue it's the announcer's job to reveal what is happening in the game. Especially on radio where the listener cannot see the scoreboard.

Well that memo sure doesn't seem to have gotten around to those who do televised sports.

There have been a few announcers over the years who have refused to play the game and revealed no-hitters in progress. Red Barber was one of them. He used to make the WPIX cameras focus on the scoreboard as he read off no runs, no hits, no errors. Of course, Red had a lot of integrity. He got fired by the CBS owners of the Yankees in 1966 when he ordered WPIX cameras to flash on the stands, showing a crowd of no more than 800 people in the stands. Red was a former Dodgers announcer who only did the Yankees because he wouldn't go to the west coast.

I didn't mean no hitters. I meant in general. TV guys are always searching for anything to talk about that might not be the game at hand. In all sports.

Can't argue with that. Most TV talking heads are nitwits. That's why the Will Ferrell movie was so funny. It was true.

Michael Kay makes no bones about his belief that what he does as an announcer has no bearing on what goes on during the game. It'll be fun listening to the idiots call him up today and complain about him costing the AJ the no hitter. Kay actually revels in twisting the the superstition knife when it comes to stuff like this.

I don't know. 60% of the time, the talking heads are right all the time.

PawSox.

EDIT:

EDIT 2: My bad. Charlie Zink had a no-hitter going through 6. Gave up a solo HR to lead off the 7th. Nothing to see here.

It's not a good idea to mention that Garza is pitching aPERFECT GAME because that could be bad luck.

So please, let'a atop talking about MATT GARZA'S PERFECT GAME out of respect for him and the game of baseball.
