I picked up this hat the other day at the store near Fenway. The Hall of Fame's uniform database agrees that this is some kind of 1974 alternate model. But, I can't find any photographs or video indicating that they actually wore this.

I was wondering if anyone remembered them or had any visual evidence that they really existed?

Actually, that is navy. (or at least the one I have is navy, I picked that photo off google) I think it might be slightly darker than the current hats are, but it's blue. The wierd thing is that I never saw any sign that a trianglular-panel hat existed on the field until very recently, so I was wondering if it was fake retro like the bright red pullover jerseys you sometimes see for sale or if it was actually worn by players before they switched to the red one in 75.

My retro Sox hat is all red, with the white B and navy bill, I've never actually seen the one you posted being worn. Then again I was 2 in 74 and only started watching baseball in the late 70s... Pretty cool hat though.

The alternate 1974 hat was actually one that the Sox ended up wearing every day at some point. The two front panels on the cap were red and the rest of teh hat was traditional blue (side and back panels as well as the bill). A lot of teams started this trend. The Brewers had yellow as the front two panels and the Orioles had white. I actually fondly recall this cap as my favorite Sox cap. The following year they went with the complete red cap and blue bill and kept that style through 1978. I am attaching a link to a 1974 photo of El Tiante with the cap in question. Nice cap. Too bad that was the year the Sox lost Fisk to a knee injury and a 7-game lead on the Orioles along with it :-(

Those look pretty cool, but I prefer the 75-78 hats. I really wish they'd at least wear those uniforms as special throwbacks once or twice. They throw all these new alternates with navy blue and a red jersey, yet I cannot remember them ever going back to their history and wearing the 70s jerseys. I don't understand why.
