That's actually quite surprising, my understanding is that most MLB coaches have to work their way up the ladder from the minor leagues before getting a 1B/3B/Bench Coaching position with a MLB club. Good for him.

A former base-stealer with some intelligence would make the perfect 1b coach. How much grooming in the minors do you really need for that? I thought most 1B/3B/Bench coaches were drinking/hunting buddies of the manager. They got the jobs regardless of how well they handled those duties in the minors.

Maury Wills once told Dave Roberts that there will come a point when everybody will know that he has to be a first base coach, and he will be that first base coach. When he got out there, he knew that was what Maury Wills was talking about.
