With the break, it more or less amounts to missing one start and being pushed back in the rotation for a second start. I assume that getting 6 1/3 innings out of the starters in the last 2 games combined had something to do with the decision...otherwise, would have made more sense to skip the start before the All Star break, re-evaluate after the break, and retroactively DL him if necessary.

Jenks on DL, Randy Willliams called up, Hottovy DFA'd


Bobby Jenks is back on the disabled list with a bad back. LHP Randy Williams has been called up.

LHP Tommy Hottovy was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster

Drew on the DL

Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew is headed to the disabled list with a left shoulder impingement. Tonight's starting pitcher, Jon Lester, will fill Drew's roster spot.

"We didn't DL him right away because we didn't have a move we wanted to make and he could have pinch-run, something like that," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

"Hopefully, the couple [of] weeks down will really do him some good and get him some strength back in that shoulder.


So Reddick wasn't replacing a healthy Drew... the plot thickens!

I hope that's the actual plot. That would mean that maybe there's some hope that JD Drew comes back in a couple of weeks and is able to contribute more than just good reads on fly balls in RF.

If the real plot is, "Get dead weight off the active roster without having to DFA a guy who was previously a very important, if not exactly beloved, contributor to a World Series championship," well, yeah. I guess that works, too.

Update on Drew

Now he's going on the DL tomorrow... The Sox optioned Weiland to make room for Lester, and will call up Sutton tomorrow.

Looks like Youk to the DL and Lavarnway is being activated. Not good, though I will be interested to see how Ryan fares in major league ABs(I assume he'll mostly DH while Papi's heel is acting up)

Atchison back to Pawtucket, Bowden recalled

Atchison pitched three innings last night and wouldn't be able to pitch in either game today, so they called up a fresh arm.


Atchison had been called up yesterday, and Lavarnway went back to Pawtucket.

More call-ups - and Drew on 60-day DL

Drew will be eligible to come off the 60-day DL in five days, which means he has not played in nearly two months. What are the chances we see him again this year? Or in a Red Sox uniform?
